luangtom
I am new at the Forums, so please bear with me if I ask past questions........ I have a Thai wife that is a US citizen and has lived in the USA for the past thirty years with me. What will be required for her to claim her rightful place again as a Thai citizen without losing her status as a US citizen? She is already on the House-Registry in the amphoe where our Thai home is located. We are approaching retirement within the next three years and wish to get some of the prelims done as soon as we can. We wish to reside in our Thai home during our retirement years. Will she have to meet the financial obligations that I do? Any answers to these questions would be appreciated or any recommendation of an attorney in the Udon Thani area that could help with these matters would be greatly appreciated. Chok dee. astral
As your wife is already registered on the Tabian Bahn, then I assume she has a Thai passport? With the passport she can simply return to Thailand. If her ID card is out of date, getting a new one should be a simple matter at the local amphur office where she is registered. There will be no financial requirements for your wife, just for you. 400,000 baht in the bank or a guaranteed pension of 40,000 baht per month
lopburi3
Astral has given you the facts. You should not need any lawyer (they are seldom needed here). If she does not have Thai passport contact nearest Consulate and start application to obtain that (if one is not helpful try another). Believe it is a simple process. A lot has changed in the last 30 years and dual citizenship is common and most government offices now are willing to assist. Also there is no problem with wife having your last name anymore as she can still own and buy land now so on visit you might want to change and get new id card if still listed as single on home register. If there is a temple anywhere near you perhaps you could talk with other Thai who I am sure would be more than happy to advise her. Believe the id card has to be taken care of in person. luangtom
I thank all for their input thus far. My wife has a passport issued from the USA, not Thailand. She is on the thabian-baan with her married-name. Her i.d.-card has expired. I do have contact with other expats in the Udon Thani area that have Thai wives. I will hopefully be able to query them for additional information, too. Again, khob khun maak.
