This experience is not mine but a friends, who renewed his annual marraige visa two days ago in Nong Khai.

Just returned from Nong Khai for my annual renewal of my Non-Immigrant "O" VISA. The following was a list of the things I was required to give to the Immigration Officer and he wasn't our favorite from AEK Udon:

1) Original of form TM. 7---Application for Extension of Temporary stay in

the Kingdom.

2) Copy of all pages in my Passport.

3) Copy of form TM. 6---Departure card.

4) Copy of every page of my Thai Bank Book.

5) Copy of Marriage Certificate.

6) Copy of my family Book.

7) Copy of wife's ID card.

8) Copy of wife's family book.

9) Copy of U.S.Embassy letter stating that I receive monies every month

from the U.S.Government and/or other sources and the amount I

receive.

10)Copy of letter from Thai bank stating that I make monthly transfers

from American bank to Thai bank giving account number and/or credit

card numbers of American bank. Letter should also state amount of

transfers and there should be a minimum of 12 transfers shown also

your ending balance, which must match the last line entry in your Thai

bank book.

Monthly transfer amounts should be as follows:

1)If your balance in Thai bank is between 500 Baht and 200,000 Baht you

will need to make 65,000 Baht per month transfers to your Thai bank.

2)Between 200,000 Baht and 300,000 Baht requires 50,000 Baht per

month transfers.

3)300,000 Baht and higher requires 40,000 Baht per month transfers.

I was not required to surrender my original notarized letter from the U.S.Embassy and was not required to submit a medical certificate. Nor was I asked for copies of my bank cards.

I got my first marriage visa approved 2 days ago, i didn't have to provide all of that.

Passport photo page and visa page.

Last page in bank book

No mention of how much money in the bank only required 40,000 per month income.

Still needed all the other stuff and also 4 photographs of us in the house.

this was in Bangkok by the way.

Also Chiang Mai is happy with proof of monthly (joint) income of 40,000 Baht regardless of how much money is in the bank... But that amount only fits if the applicant actually does apply for an extension based on marriage ... What did your friend write in the field where he is asked for his reasons for extension? - (Just wondering).

Ray, were you really required to submit all this, or was it you who decided that you needed to ?

Naka.

Geez, only happy that I'm over 50, can hopefully stay happily married, and be able to hang on to the 800,000 Baht for a Retirement extension!

We went to Chiang Khan to day to get 3 months visa type O Marriage extended to a one year. They required everything stated above (perhaps more) and also wanted and kept the "Original" of the US Embassy Letter of Income and told us we would have to get a new one every year.

They also wanted to see proof of where the 800,000bt was transfered from plus a host of other picky things....luckily, the wife is a good record keeper....it was almost if they were searching for something to cause a problem for us, but the officer said, " he was just making sure everything was in order for Bangkok to look at so we wouldn't have a problem." He also stated that "bad farangs" were the reason rules were changing and that the "good farangs" were complaining.

We have always had no problem there and the officer was professional in every way, but it just seemed they are tightening things up a bit.

Naka what you saw there other then financial stuff has always been standard at Nong Khia.

Prior to this you had to prove 40K a month on a marriage visa. Nothing about balance requirments an additional monies if you didn't have 400K in the bank that was all new. Hence the question.

Going somewhere else, I thought they came out with a directive that you had to process in your local area?

By the way thankfully this didn't happen to me but anothre farrang in Udon.

That is a good question, I didn't ask he has never had anything but a marriage visa, this was his third renewal.

All the numbers given seem to be based on 400K so I assume they were meant for marriage visa.

Maybe we shouldn't complain at least we don't have to provide photos yet.

Getting rid of the bad farrangs wonder what that criteria is :o Does sound like a purge is underway wonder what will be next.

The 65K number is surprising that is the financil requirement for a single guy

Actually, all the numbers given in your OP is based on "65,000 a month or 800,000 in the bank or a combination of the two" --- that is the official requirements for an extension based on retirement.

There is no such thing as a "marriage visa" - there's only a non-imm "O" visa that can be extended on grounds of retirement or on grounds being married to a Thai. I may be wrong, but I don't think there is any difference at all between neither the visa nor the extension stamps for e.g. a 40 year old guy married to a Thai and e.g. the 60 year old single ... The only way to discriminate between a retirement-extension and a marriage-extension would be the requirements applied in the application process - not anything appearing in the passport or elsewhere but the files the immigration police keeps - (at least there isn't anything in my passport indication that I've ever had a Thai wife despite my three extensions because of her).

So how do you guys know, that you've got a marriage extension and not a retirement extension (if you're older than 50) - when the requirements applied fit with the retirement-extension?

Normally there is a large stamp saying RETIREMENT or THAI WIFE placed next to each extension of stay here in Bangkok.

Actually I have always had a small stamp in Thai, so unless you ask your Thai partner what it says you would not know.

Surely every one must know what extension they applied for.

Nothing like that in my passport. The stamps are about half a passport page and say just that - "Application of stay is permitted up to .... Applicant must leave the Kingdom within the date specified herein. Offenders will be prosecuted" ... - nothing else.

There is some Thai text, though, part of the stam, in front of some number. The number differs from year to year but the text has been the same on all extension stamps. It says: อนุญาตตาม ว. ที่

Does that say anything about reasons?

But do they know which extension they were given? -- We won't know about the guy in OP unless they tell us whether the application had to go to Bangkok or whether he was younger than fifty.

My Wife tells me it means extension allowed.

Obviously we folks from Bangkok need to have it spelled out and they do so. I good guide would be the spouse - if they are required to submit ID and sign paperwork it is for a family extension of stay - they are not required to do so for retirement extensions of stay.

I dont understand the OP.

He went into immigration and came out with his visa.

Ive always used Nong Khai and always got what I was after.

These were all good questions guys and I went back and asked them. He thought he was getting a marriage visa and submitted all the documents for one, as he did with the original application. They issued a standard retirement visa, the same as I have.

On the visa issued at Nong Khai there is nothing written as to married to a Thai, or retirement everything is written in Thai.

So there was no change. The information listed as to funds applies to a single person getting an annual and is what was already in effect.

Maybe as was pointed out he put the wrong thing on the form.

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the guys who responded, this would have been a major change to married to a Thai status. I'm grateful to know it is incorrect.

I think you should do your extension in Bangkok. 40k monthly income is all you need. I never heard of anyone needing to show 50k or 65k depending on his bank account balance.

Nong Khai is such a pain in the backside every time I extend my Non O. My missus asked why and they say it's because Bangkok give them hassle if application and documents not just-so. Fair enough. I guess they're just covering their backs rather than going out of their way to make things difficult.

Documentation required Oct this year at Nong Khai for extension based on marriage:

Copy all pages of passport.

Copy departure card.

Copy all pages of bank book.

A NEW embassy stamped letter confirming income from overseas AND employment start-date. This despite a special trip to check if original letter was ok to re-use (YES was the answer. Queue application day and OH NO! NEED NEW LETTER)

Letter from bank stating amounts transferred-in over last 6 months plus current balance (MUST match balance in bank book - so gotta do this letter and update bank book at same time else have to do all again)

Copy wifes ID.

Copy wifes family book.

Copy marriage cert.

Copy childs' birth cert.

2 Applications plus 2 photos (2"x3") and 2 copies of the all of the above were required.

Hope this helps someone out. I'll be prepared for this a bit better next time. I dare say the rules/requirements will be different next year though:)

IJ I really admire you guys. To be prepared to tell someone all this just to get a visa to stay in LOS. I will not tell the Oz Gov 10 percent of this to get a Health Card. BTW the TW has the 3 Rai of land Two Story House I bought for her, we support her family and half the village in loans etc and after 2 years living the so called dream ,doing the mandatory 90 day visa runs, are now back in Oz, and she has it all for sale cos she says "we do not need the Thai b_llshit"

Man that is somethigng but you were not alone friend from the states came here. He and his wife had lived in the states for years. Financially secure. They returned and are building a house on a lake in Houston Texas, her decesion not his.

I thnk she had the family thing pretty much under control and knew not to be to close to them in dustance, they stayed here in Udon for over a year trying it out. I believe the final straw was she wanted to open a Mexican resturant, great cook. When she found out that they would have to pay the boys in brown, to operate in peace. It was time to go. There is no doubt about it is huge committment to live here.

Some of the guys were going to Bangkok form this area to process thier annual becuase it was so much simplier. However on the last runs they were told they had to process in Nong Khia because that was the area they live in. As usual things are as clear as mud, some went back anyway and processed with no problems and nothing said about it.
