Hi,

I'm arriving in Thailand from Australia on the 11th of January 07 only staying a week then flying back to England. I would like to go down to an Island for four days then spend the rest of my time in Bangkok (Ko San road going to the markets and seeing a bit of the city). Can anyone recommend where to go? I was initialy thinking Ko Tao, i was planning on getting the night train down (to save time) then a boat across in the morning. But i have been told its really quiet and a bit boring (i dont dive). I've been recommended Phi Phi and phangyang. But i beleive i will have to get a flight (these seem quite expensive). Can someone recommend where to go or whether there is a decent way to get to Phi Phi or phangyang? I'm a 20 year old guy traveling on my own so looking for a busy kind of place where i can meet people.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi, just because you dont dive doesnt mean that Koh Tao is boring. ATV's mini golf, bowling, fishing, wakeboarding, ski ing, sailing good night life and parties etc. Put them with lots of fun people and a beautiful island and its far from boring. You say you dont dive? then why not do a dive course wile you are there. You can do a discover scuba in an afteroon or a full open water course in 4 days. Wherever you end up enjoy. :o

Given that you've only a week, I suggest you seriously reconsider your intinerary; Unless you're going to fly, you'll waste far too much time travelling. I'd suggest a programme closer to Bangkok or, if you're intent on going to an Island, get a cheap flight to Phuket.

I was planning on getting the night train down, so wouldnt be wasting any time at all. Sleep while traveling sounded good to me. Wheres the best place to get a flight to phuket? Is it just as cheap to go to Ko Samui flying?

You'd be wasting the night.

Try the following airlines if you want a cheap flight.

airasia.com

nokair.com

fly12go.com

No, Samui is more expensive - no low cost carriers to Samui - Bangkok Airway's own airport as with Koh Chang. Have a look at their web site.

Samet is 3-4 hours from bangkok, Au Phai has a backpacker scene with a cheesy disco on the beach.. which is ideal hunting ground so to speak.

So if you had one week in Thailand where would you go? I do really want to go to one of these gorgeous beachs i keep seeing pictures of. Want it to have a good night life/party atmosphere with backpackers but nothing seedy. Can you recommend somewhere?

BKK 2 - 3 days, balance in Pattaya or Phuket. Phuket if you like tourist trap with decent beach, pattaya if you like wall to wall thai hos and dirty beach

If I were you I'd split my time between Bangkok & Phuket.

1 week?

BKK - 2D/2N. roam the streets and taste the night life of BKK, daytime visit the outskirts, ayuthayya, lopburi, cha-am, huahin

Southern trip to sun, sand and s*k - 3D/3N go to Trang, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Phangan and/or Koh Samui ...Phuket is overrated.

you'll waste at least 2days worth of travelling.

How easy is it to get to Koh Phi Phi from Bangkok? Also if i get a domestic flight in Thailand how long before the folight time do i need to be there (i.e. three hours like the uk????). Cheers. Yeah Koh Samet seemed like a good choice with my schedule wasent sure how good it was.

Why anyone would want to try and squeeze so much into a solitary week, wasting at least two days travelling in the process is beyond me.

Stick with Bangkok and Phuket & you can do a day trip to Phi Phi whilst you're there. I'm sure you'll return in the future, so don't be tempted to try and do too much.

There are numerous day trips with various itineraries from Phuket. I think the express boats take about 1 and a half hours & the speed boats are bit quicker. Typically, you'll leave Phuket about 07:30 and return about 16:00.

Cheers,

Phi Phi is a couple of hours by boat from Phuket. It's paradise, but you'd be bored after a day or 2.. Phuket is also good for the trip to Phang Nga bay islands..

I would agree about spending my time in Phuket. Personally, I would stay in Patong and take day trips to the islands. Bangkok is good for nightlife and shopping and a few sites, but it's also a bit grimey.. And Kao San Rd is full of weirdos.

You don't need to stay near the jetties. There are travel agents everywhere that help you book these trips, including in hotels. A minibus will pick you up early from the hotel (make sure you have travel insurance btw).

Have a look at phuket.com for an idea of what's available, but don't bother booking trips through them.

Quick questions, my flight gets into Bangkok at 14.15 the next flight to phuket from bangkok is 15.55 can i make it? If not the next one is at 18.45 via airasia.

Personally, I'd go for the later flight.. Doesn't take much to delay a flight. Check what airport the connections are from, because many Phuket flights are from the old airport. Meter taxis to Patong cost about 400b and you'd get there about 8.30..

Hi Borat

And All international flights land at the new A/port on the outskirts of Bangkok. Im fairly confident you would never make that earlier flight like tw25rw suggested. The taxi drive between airports is (safely) 1 hour and most domestic flights like you there 2 hours before, but thats fairly flexible here.

Sorry to 'p*ss on yer chips' but its better to know and plan, as I see you are sensibly doing. This situation might also affect your onward choice ( there are too too many good places to choose from, for a 1 week holiday here, but in saying that, the beaches down south are awesome

ENJOY and plan you next visit, cos there is usually follow-up ones, once us Brits discover The Land of Smiles.

Regard

Dave (ex- Sawf London now Surin,N.E. Thailand) :D

I'd take the 18:45 flight. Air Asia fly from Suvarnabhumi, so you wont have to change airports.
