My GR bitch has come into season and I would like advice as to when she is most fertile and receptive to mating (which I dont want to happen)

Last week she went through the "bleeding" time

They can actually mate and be perceptive from day one of the heat period, although chances are small. In general dogs are on their peak between approximately (and I take it wide) the 10th day of heat till the 15th day.

Usually in the beginning and end of the heat cycle the bitch has no interest and will walk away, sit, or bite the male off.

Best is though to keep her strict seperate for about three weeks.

Acording to my vet he says the season is about 3 weeks when most likely to catch,both of my golden retrievers have just been in season,and one of them got f**d by a stray dog that jumped over the wall into my garden,i rushed it to the vet and he injected something to stop it having pups,but it may not work.now i will wait about 2-3 months and get them both spayed.He also said he can inject contraceptives but it has to be before they come on heat.
