Water pollution puts island's future at risk

Water pollution is threatening the future of popular Phi Phi resort island in Krabi. Pankham Kittithorakul, chairman of Ao Nang tambon administration organisation (TAO), which oversees Koh Phi Phi, said only 200,000 litres of waste water goes to the island's treatment plant each day. This was about half of the waste water generated on the island. The 28-million-baht plant, funded by Danida from Denmark, can handle up to 400,000 litres of waste water per day. Pankham said the problem was caused by a number of resort operators who refused to build treatment ponds or fat-oil filter tanks in order to link to the TAO's treatment facility. Instead, they directly discharged untreated waste into public waterways.

The Ao Nang TAO had tried to educate business operators and building owners about environmental problems caused by the release of untreated waste. They refused to cooperate. Danida provided funding to the TAO in 2005 to build the treatment plant on 3.75 rai of land and to develop the site as as a public park.

What kind of nonsense is that.

Closing them down if not wiling to cooperate would be a better strategie.

Until then a 100.000 baht a day fines for 'polluting' the local nature and economy.
