I'm looking to go to Hong Kong a few days with my wife (who holds a Thai passport). I'm sure this has been discussed ten times before here, but I can't seem to find it. Do Thai passport holders need a visa to Hong Kong or not? She has my last name so we can easily show we're married when arriving, which I assume make things easier...

Yes, she will get admitted for 30 days without visa. They are also likely to ask how long you will be staying and only give a day more then what you say. Go to the immigration counter together and hand him both passports at the same time. They tend to give unaccompanied Thai women a hard time (as in most ASEAN countries).

Definitely. I went with the wife and when arriving at the front of the immigration queue at HK we were sent to 2 different passport desks. My wife was getting drilled so I had to call out that we were travelling together and everything was hunky dory.

The same happened with a rich Thai couple I know (Both sent to different desks, she was drilled and he wasn't). So insist on going together if they try to send you to different counters.

Another time we were leaving for Singapore and we appraoched passport control separately at Don Muang. The wife (then GF) was interrogated by the Thai passport controller! on what she was going to do, how long she was going to stay etc etc.

Again I called out from behind that we were together and the questioning stopped.

Now we always approach together on exit and entry to avoid any possible humiliation.

Except when we last left Soowanapoom and even though we were married I was turned away from the Thai only passport desk and sent to the enormous foreigner line. When we returned to Bangkok I was allowed to be processed with my wife at the Thai only desk. So I guess its up to the individual IO.

Anyway, it is disturbing that due to a few bad eggs going abroad they all seem to be tarred with the same brush. I feel sorry for the genuine female travellers.

My Thai GF and I visited Hong Kong last month and initially she handed in her passport and the IO asked if she was on her own, she said she was with me I was called forward, received the normal entry questions and in we came.

On our return, I noticed the long line for non-Thais, I approached the person supervising the line with a smile, and was allowed to join the Thai only line whilst other foreign visitors were sent to the non Thai line.
