Monkeys

Featured Replies

I tried to do a google, but nothing. Yesterday as I was going into town, a small troop crossed the road a few hundred yards in front of the car. At the shoulder the big (male?) was about the size of a rottie but not as long in the body. The colouring looked similar to a chocolate labrador but the hair was longer. The tail was just a short stump. There appeared to be 4 or 5 females in tow. Any idea what they might have been someone?

I could not get the link to work. However googled on stump tailed macaques, and found a BBC link. The coat was much darker that shown there.

pig tailed macaque ?

Reading the description it could have been. The coat colour of this one does appear to vary, however I must admit I hanen't seen them the colour I saw. The visibility was very good, so I'm sure of it's Cocolate Lab colour. Thanks

mosha it loaded right up again for me;

btw, coat colour varies even among the same species (darker or lighter specimens) so things like rump colour, tail size, facial/skull, would be easier to pinpoint

no photos?? quoting from the same link:

have thick, long, dark brown fur covering their bodies and short tails which measure between 3.2 and 69 mm Stump-tailed macaques have bright pink or red faces which darken to brown or nearly black as they age and are exposed to sunlight. They are covered with long, shaggy fur, but their short tails and faces are hairless and they go bald with age. Infants are born white and darken with age (Fa 1989; Rowe 1996; Groves 2001).

try the link separately its called primate factsheets from the primate info network...

Hi Bina.

My internet connection was playing up yesterday, the link works now. The monkeys I saw were much darker than in the photos in that link. I was too far away to see their faces. Certainly a species of macaque from the way they walked etc. There are plenty of working ones around here with a dark fawn coat.
