I guess it's only negative if you are pro-party, I am sure there are many folks who would love to see the parties go, we already see an increasing number of "boutique" resorts (who the heck came up with that stupid term?) being opened on KPG and these are for the kind of visitors that wouldn't be interested in getting drunk on Had Rin beach and passing out. They also have more cash in their pockets.

I can see it coming, bye bye parties, bye bye backpackers, bye bye 200Baht a night bungalows, hello Samui V2.0.

I don't get the paper, so never saw this letter to the editor (which is what it appears to be, rather than an actual news article)

I will say that this person doesn't seem to be anti-Full Moon Party, but rather to be just anti the non-stop parties that have taken over Ban Tai and made the area, which is still pretty much local people living village life, quite unbearable.

First it was the Black Moon, once a month, then the Half Moon, twice a month and now the random Shiva Moon and Jungle Experience parties which only seem to go on when there are alot of tourists. I believe the letter writer is complaining because since the 15th there have been 4, count them 4 parties (and yes, it is only the 20th). The black moon and half moon parties were cancelled due to mourning, so, instead of having them on the regularly scheduled dates, they had them one after the other.

My husband's family comes from the Ban Tai area and most of them still live there and yes, the locals are fed up. They dislike the noise, the drunks wandering the streets early morning, and the heavy traffic on what are usually very quiet roads. I think most of them would agree with the letter writer, keep the parties in Had Rin, where it doesn't affect a good portion of the population.

SBK,

well i have been gone for most of the past few months but when i did go back, i was told that a lot more police had been coming around KPG, and some of them were FARANG police tripping people up... so to me it does sound like they are already starting to crack down a bit more. on thong nai pan yai, the resort owners who were sick of their guests complaining about the noise at various places at night, contacted the government, who came and issued a warning that all bars must close at a reasonable time and keep the noise level down. there have been no parties on the beach since. personally, i find it much more boring now, but i suppose for most people it's a good thing.

Yes please, John, if you wouldn't mind scanning it and then PMing it to me I'd be very interested in reading it.

Also there is an article in thairath today about 2 Thai nationals and one Lao national arrested for smuggling marijuana to Koh Phangan. They were arrested by Koh Samui police but the article doesn't say where.

I agree that those -surplus to FM- parties should be stopped; in village areas at least.

It surprises me though that the locals have no 'power' to stop the same; surely they must have their connections with the lawmakers ? :o

It doesn't appear that they were on Koh Phangan when arrested.

Lao Po, the law and lawmakers has nothing to do with it, neither does any imagined mafia connections. The real reasons are very simple. In most cases the ones putting on the parties are also locals and it is very difficult for people to confront their cousin's daughter's husband about this without it turning ugly. Instead, they complain to each other and put up with it. Like they do most other stuff.

That is the problem exactly, plus let's not forget it is a major source of income for some people in the local area.
