Official reassures public of safe chicken for Chinese New Year

BANGKOK: -- Chicken sold during the upcoming Chinese New Year, which falls early next month, will be safe from the deadly avian influenza because certificates will be issued after laboratory tests, Livestock Development Department director-general Sakchai Sriboonsue said Saturday.

Mr. Sakchai made the assurance to the public on consuming chickens during the Chinese New Year which falls on February 7 following the re-emergence of avian influenza in chickens in Nakhon Sawan and Phichit provinces earlier

this week.

It will take a few more days for laboratory analysts to identify the strain of bird flu virus which infected poultry chickens raised by farmers in Phichit's Sak Lek district.

Related government agencies are now working hard to contain the outbreak of the disease including a transfer of birds to slaughterhouses, he said.

Lab tests are being conducted and certificates will be issued as tests indicate that chickens prsented in the markets are free of avian flu.

Thais of Chinese origin traditionally offer boiled or otherwise cooked chicken to their family gods during the Lunar New Year and consume among their family members later.

Good news for the chickens of Thailand ! They will be safe because a piece of paper says they are ! So anybody who catches bird-flu, and dies from eating infected & poorly-cooked chicken, can apply for a refund, after the funeral ? :o

Livestock Dept. educates merchants of sale of hygienic poultry

The Livestock Development Department arranges a training session for poultry merchants to educate them about hygienic standards of poultry selling and prepares more than two million stickers for poultry products approved by the department.

Deputy Director-General of the Livestock Development Department, Dr.Thanit Anekwit (ธนิตย์ เอนกวิทย์), says the training session is aimed at preventing another bird flu outbreak during this year’s Chinese New Year. More than two million stickers will be distributed to the merchants to attach on packages of poultry products to guarantee its chicken meat, he says.

The deputy director-general states that more than 1,180 poultry shops are interested in attending the training session. They are required to inform the department of the names of farms and slaughterhouses which provide poultry for them.

Dr.Thanit adds that the department will continue its campaigns on safe poultry selling until the Songkran (สงกรานต์) Festival in April this year.

A thai friend of mine on day said : "thailand is the biggest chicken in the world'', of course he meant "thailand is the biggest kitchen in the world"... don't forget to remove the certificate before you cook your chick

It's a worry that they actually believe this stuff ! something to do with rote learning perhaps.

Naka.
