Hi all,

I am looking for a good website/s with Thai style tattoo art with explanations, or if anyone has any info relating to this topic?

Thanks for all replies :o

Your timing is great for asking this question, as my partner and I have just been out to the temple THIS MORNING to get one! I've been doing research on this on the net for a while now.

The tattoos are called "sak-yant" and are considered quite sacred, they are done by monks and blessed and many people believe they give the wearer various powers, of protection and so forth.

There is one temple in Bangkok which is particularly famous for this, it's called Wat Bang Phra. It's about 50km north of BKK and you're well advised to take someone with you who speaks Thai or knows the procedure since there don't seem to be any English speakers there.

The website with the most information is http://www.sak-yant.com but unfortunately the navigation is a bit haphazard, there's some good info though.

Other websites which I found interesting are http://sakyants.blogspot.com/2006/01/world-of-sak-yant.html and http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/8769/Yantra.htm

My partner got this one: http://www.sak-yant.com/archive/108yant/maetap/maetap.jpg

Good luck and feel free to ask more questions if you want to know anything specific.

Cheers

Pete

This is also an interesting tale of a couple of guys who were making a world-wide documentary on traditional tatts, and their experiences in Thailand: http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/trip_update13.htm

OP: Are you asking where to get a tattoo or the history of traditional tattoos?

Aside from the traditional thai tattoo's there is a distinctive style in modern Thai tattoo's. For instance the Thai dragon is very different to the Japanese dragon. The Thai one is more like a dragon snake as it has no legs. ALso shadow work is different.

I have two large pieces do thai style and, although in many ways they are similar to Japanese work there are many differences (the Carp has a different face etc).

So if you are looking at getting a modern Thai tattoo its worth going to someone who upholds and understands the Thai 'way'.

Thanks for all your replies. The sites semm to advise that the places are "unclen" why is that? I have had tattoos in Thailand but it seems the traditional tattoos are warned against?

Are there any monks or tattooist in the U.K who do thai Style tattoos?

Thanks :o
