September 13, 200421 yr Does anyone know if The Emporium Shopping Centre on Sukhumvit (BKK) has a wi-fi facility? I'm interested because my GF is opening a small cafe situated right next to this shopping centre. I'm thinking that if we could install a wi-fi facility whose coverage included The Emporium, then this could be a useful marketing tool (we can include promotion of our cafe etc on the log-in pages etc). If there is no wi-fi at The Emporium, then what is the law in Thailand about installing wi-fi hot-spots? (Are there any rules? ) I'm a techie guy, so happy about the actual installation etc, but I don't wan't to break any rules.... Cheers Simon (Posted in internet also)
September 15, 200421 yr starbucks emporium has wifi setup from m-web for free with a drink. How long can you make one drink last??
September 15, 200421 yr Author It would be good to get coverage throughout The Emporium, but I will need q bit of power/antenna gain. I can mount an external antenna, but it will not be in an ideal position. Does anyone know of wifi equipment suppliers in BKK? (The only contacts I can find seem only to supply weedy little laptop wifi cards...)

Start off with a ton of access points and repeaters on every floor.

Hmm, maybe you forgot to switch on the power to your wifi systems ..... I've designed and installed wifi systems back in Europe, and have got very good coverage throughout a complete office building without any repeaters at all. Just 1 very well positioned high power access point and high-gain antenna... Simon (Actually my Masters degree and 15 years career was in the design of microwave comms equipments, signal propagation etc, so my wifi work was not just down to luck )

No way you can cover that building with one AP.
September 18, 200421 yr Author Yes, I agree that the Emporium is a big building! And I have the additional problem that I cannot locate the AP in the most optimum location! I might hook up a temporary AP and wander around with my laptop to see how good/bad coverage really is.

At one such shop I saw a signal booster being sold. I asked the store owner if it's legal to use it in Thailand and he said it's actually illegal. Many manufacturers that manufactures Wireless LAN router do actually make antenna/signal boosters but those line of products are not in the catalogues distributed by the Thai importers.
