Helloto everyone in this forum,

I am going to Bangkok next week to make the marriage certificate and help my future wife to apply for a visa to come to live with me in Bulgaria.

As this is a very serious step in my life, i would like to ask for some advice from others that had gone trough this. I am wondering also if thai ladies can adapt easily to the different weather(the climate in Bulgaria is a little bit better than in UK), and is it difficult to get used to the comments of the ignorant people when seeing an european man with a asian lady?

I will appreciate your answers,

I know a lot of Thai's who have lived happily in the UK for over 20 years, they can adapt no problem, they like to have their own DVD's and TV shows sometimes, like access to Thai food or the ability to buy the ingredients and enjoy holidays to Thailand. It is not for everyone but many of them can adapt. I may consider spending some time in my country with my wife but we are going on holiday there for 5 weeks to see what she thinks. I think the woman has to see the place before making a decision. Good luck.

We lived in the UK ten years and my wife loved it, especially the cold weather would you believe it, she would always turn off the central heating before we went to sleep even in the winter. Theres also TGN Thai Global Network satelite TV free but be warned once you get it you'll never be able to watch any other channel, unles you have two tv's.

As for the ignorant just ignore and pity them, had one moran call me a Paki lover, just laughed in his face.

Best of luck to the both of you and remember carrots make an excellent Som Tam salad.

If she loves you, can get Thai food, even DVDS. Then she will be fine. FOOD is the most important to a Thai woman.

You are absolutely correct!

When my wife came to the US eight years ago, she missed Thailand very much and she didn't like the cold weather. Over time, she has adapted. The only thing she misses now is some of her favorite Thai foods.

We are lucky though that we have a large Thai community and Wat. She has access to most Thai ingredients. And she watches Thai TV shows from a streaming video website. It's better than live Thai TV because she can watch any show any time of the day she wants.

It will be difficult for her at first, but she can adjust if she really tries.

Very good reply. There is no one size fits all answer. The more cosmopolitan she is the more easily she will adapt. If she has spent all her life in the moo ban living with the family then she may have trouble.

Seconded, thirded and fourth. Get this and anything else is just a bonus.

Yeah we have just recently found some good one's and they are getting better all the time. The mrs had been here 18 months without any thai tv, just some dvd's and she adapted quite well. The fact that she can now get this, is just a bonus to her.

Where your fiance can survive is a lot more up to her and you as well, than the fact that she is Thai.

I am from Norway. There are about 10 000 Thai's living there. With about 70 living in Longyearbyen, on the Svalbard (Spitzbergen) islands. Longyearbyen is at 78 degrees north. And itæs illegal to leave town without a rifle to protect yourself against polar bears!

Here is an article about them

So I do not think the climate will be the problem, really. I mean....Norwegians go to Bulgaria for some sun and warmth!

Most all of the Thai ladies I know in America, have adapted very well, amazingly so really. It helps very much if they can find a few Thai friends, and share their favorite food together. It just takes a little time and a lot of Patience on both your parts.

Frankly I , and my American expat friends have found it more difficult for us, to adapt to the Thai culture, since we made the big step and moved to Thailand. I wish we could blend in as easily as they did.

I would say go for it , and just be ready for some bumps in the road now and then. :o

Have to agree with you and the other posters. This is going to be the problem in Bulgaria - can you get much Asian food there and is there an established 'Asian network' she can contact and join? Otherwise, I can imagine it would be a problem for the OP's lady there - big language and cultural barrier to overcome. Norway would be a doddle by comparison.

Another Important issue is Family if you have a close Family in Bulgaria and she is welcome into the family ,this will be a great help ,My wife has been in Scotland for 5 years now and while she has adapted quite well and we have also managed to get the food side sorted out ,

However when she speaks to her family back home it can be a bit hard especially when there has been a death in the family ,in the last 2 years she has lost 2 Aunts and 1 uncle to cancer

Good Luck when the time comes

My wife loves it here in the UK, she has many thai freinds, endless supply of thai food and tv thai online.

She loves it so much i have to drag her back to thailand in april to live along with our 2 kids.

The only thing i can say to you spitfire is that i would think the uk is much easier to adapt to than bulgaria, you cant just go by the climate.

The food is a big one, try to find all the shops that stock before she arrives so you can be sure that they have what she needs & I am surprised no one has mentioned language yet. Get her into a good language school, the more independance she has to be able to converse & get around by herself the happier she will be. Apart from that, as others have said weather doesn't seem to be a problem for a lot of thai people, my husband loves winters in the UK & works outside in his job & still has no problem witht he wind & rain :o

Can Thai girls adapt to life overseas? Some do, some don't.

Can farang adapt to life in Thailand? Some do, some don't.

And your useful advice is.................?

Don't just go off the title Hippo, read the post it explains what he is asking. :o

If everyone answered in that fashion, ThaiVisa wouldn't be the useful source of information that it is.

Check around Bulgaria and see the availability of asian markets for food stuff. Apart from weather, I believe food and having lot of thai stuff around as mentioned is the best course of action. One can adapt anywhere especially if you love the person.

My wife get´s along here in Germany. She has her friends, lot´s of Thai food and some dvd´s from time to time. TV5 - Thai TV doesn´t interest her much and she hasn´t much time to watch TV as she goes to school and we have 3 kids. She call´s at least 12 hours a month back home and she´s getting homesick from time to time ( she´s 4 years here now). I had to change to a new job as I was travelling too much and was only home at the weekends.

She likes my parents and they like her, so there is a good contact between them.

My wife is patiently waiting that our kids grow up and we´ll have some income to live in Thailand full-time when old.

Short-term: If we´d have enough dosh to live in Thailand now, she would have booked the flights already.

Donx whats the URL of that website please? We've been using www.siamtv.org but its live Thai TV not individual shows you can choose to watch when you want.

Cheers.

The website my wife is currently using is Thaitv.tv but she has used Doozija.com in the past. You pay a monthly fee of about $10 for these sites. We get the $100 for one year membership and save $20.
