BBQ rider sees error of Eastern Freeway ways

John Masanauskas

February 02, 2008 12:00am

THE motorcyclist who was photographed riding on the Eastern Freeway with a barbecue strapped to his body has admitted it wasn't a bright idea.

And "Stuart" is also having second thoughts about an earlier incident when he hauled a two-seater couch on his motorbike.

"I do think it was dangerous," he said yesterday.

"I don't think I'll carry anything but a pillion passenger from now on."

Stuart, 27, who didn't want his real name revealed, was ridiculed when the Herald Sun published a photo yesterday of his barbecue escapade.

An astonished motorist had snapped him while he was transporting the barbecue on the Eastern Freeway on Sunday evening.

Police were not impressed and started an investigation.

Stuart, who migrated from New Zealand in August, said he picked up the barbecue left on a nature strip for a hard rubbish collection.

A Buddhist, he had been returning home from a temple in Box Hill.

"I've been known to be a bit strange and to see things differently," he said.

"It was the challenge (of transporting the barbecue) more than the thing itself."

But Stuart didn't count on the reaction of work and housemates who teased him after recognising the rider in the photo. "I wouldn't do it again, it was too embarrassing," he said.

Stuart said he recently ferried a couch on his bike from Keilor Downs to his Sydenham flat. "People say it can't be done, but I proved them wrong," he said.

Stuart's housemates said they weren't too surprised when they saw yesterday's photo in the Herald Sun.

"He does some crazy things, it's something that he would do," said one housemate.

Really does pale in comparison when you see some of the motorbikes here.

It's not too uncommon to see a guy on a bike flying down a single lane one-way street with propane tanks stacked 5 or 6 high on the back.

I'd be interested to know the strangest motorbike transportation act anyone has seen in LOS.

Saw a guy in Vietnam carrying a large fridge on the back of his motocycle. Later on we were pulled over by the police because we had a suitcase on the rack on the top of the SUV. Not supposed to put anything on top of the vehichle.
