Food Price Rises

I couldn’t believe this weekend how much a pack of butter I normally buy has just risen to. In the last 4 months or so the price has risen from 35 baht to around 40 baht then to about 45 baht. With the general rise in dairy products that seemed to be a fair rise. However this past week the price has risen again to an astonishing 75 baht. So in less than 6 months that is an outrageous rise of over 100%.

Needless to say I am no longer buying this particular brand of butter and should others follow which seems likely then I shall give up butter for good.

Aren’t there some kinds of controls in this country to prevent food manufacturers from exploiting consumers by imposing such sharp price rises?

I am normally v bad at remembering prices but over the past couple of months have been a bit more aware and have had a few nasty shocks.

Milk, butter and tea being some of them.

Did you realised that all price are going up a lot?

Not forget the cost of transportation is gone up and that will not stop yet! And that isn't related to Thailand only but to the whole world. How you can expect that the prices in Thailand will stay if all cost around the world are going up?

Unfortunate the income will never go up at the same time and that much!

butter, lipton tea and such are not the common thai foods and sometimes imported or on the foreign license - sticking to thai staple and to the locally made products would safe money. Duty taxes for imports are high and often those products are classified as not essential or branded as luxurious

But the butter I have referred to is a locally produced brand. I agree that all imported food including butter is considerably more expensive which I generally avoid.

I would be very surprised if any other food item produced in Thailand has risen by over 100% in such a short period of time.

All commodity prices have gone through the roof in the last few years, it is a world thing.

I wonder what the people who cant afford to buy such luxuries as butter and tea bags will do if it carries on like this.

That's amazing. I know the price of Lipton and usually get it for about 150 per 100.

Having said that, the pricing structure has always been a bit screwy - the individually wrapped tea-bags were 150 baht per box of 100, but the boxes of loose bags (not wrapped) were more expensive (on a "per bag" basis). Maybe someone has recalculated what they should be charging?

The weirdest thing was Tesco had put the price up more than anywhere else at 199Bt

The small locally owned store which is normally more expensive had put up to 185Bt

Perhaps an indication of what's to come if Tesco ever gets to eradicate the competition?

These commodities aren't exactly luxuries. many Thai families buy them.

Definitely what we are seeing over the past year or two is a much larger and quicker increase than has been seen before then.

Is there any kind of parallel here with the milk pricing scandal in the UK where it was found that the sharp increase in price had not been passed on to the suppliers at all, it was all going into the retailers/distributors pockets.

Somebody is making some money out of this. With the baht being so strong, imports should be cheaper, not dearer.
