Amazon.com has a set of [expensive and hard to find here] motorcycle tires....value is $200 and wondering if anyone out there has had experience in importing tires from abroad? would like to find out before i order to see if it is cost effective, or should i just pay the local price$??

is it a % of value??? or flat rate??

I imported some wheels from the stetes, was told it was 15 per cent duty,so in they came, declared value $200, taxes charged 14000 baht !,..i nearly went mad listening to how they justified it,in the end paid up, i was told tyres are 10 per cent duty, but if travelling with anything else,ie wheels they will be taxed at the higher rate,.they will tell you one thing and do another, sorry i can offer no conclusive advise, its a minefield :o

No Mike, i went for the Yahama tw200 and it's a good bike, except for the tires...two sizes, an 18" on the front and 14" on the rear and FAT tires. Would that shop have a website or phone # that you could pass along to me.

You're scaring me with the import duties. wow, that's big baht!!

they may have them, where are you located ? this shop is near the naklua post office turn off on sukomvit, as for a website, thats a laugh, if you could see the place, im not even sure it has electric ! but they do have and can get some odd tyre sizes, i buy all my 18 and 21 inch dirt bike tyres there,.

Yea, thai websites are hard to find....I've been searching on google and google thai and can't find anything. If you are in the neighborhood, maybe you could get their phone # or their BKK contact #, as I'm sure that's their source. They are out there.

And I live in Chiang Mai and even fewer choices up here.

Thanks mike.....

It has been my experience that Customs will tax not only the cost of the item but also the cost of the shipping. Add the two together then multiply by the % quoted for duty and you'll see roughly what you will be paying. They will probably add VAT and excise tax on the entire amount as well.
