Marrying In Thailan - Lost My Origional Divorce Papers

I Plan on getting married to a wonderfull Thai woman, said wedding to take place in Thailand.

We had planned on a Buddhist Ceremony, and then legally registering our marriage at the amphur to make it official.

I have to obtain an "affirmation of freedom to marry" from the British Embassy in Bangkok before the marriage can be legally registered. To do this I have to show my Origional Divorce papers, ( Presumably my decree absolute ).

I have looked high and low, and I'm afraid that I have lost the origional document, (it was issued some 16 years ago).

All the books that I've read stress that I have to show the origional document, not a copy.

I know that I can apply for a replacement copy of my decree absolute... but will this do? If it won't does this mean that I cannot leagally marry my partner? If that is so... it seems rather harsh.

Don't worry.

Get a copy from the issuing court in the UK, it will have the necessary stamps etc. and to all intents and purposes is an 'original'. No different from getting a duplicate birth certificate :o

Why does the embassy even need to know you were previously married. If there is a box that asks if you were previously married just tick "no." Or swear out a declaration that you have the capacity to marry, i.e., are not now married to another person. Swear it on a portrait of the Queen or something. Isn't that enough :o
