I have become familiar with thinking that ประมาณ means 'to estimate' or 'roughly'.

This usage doesn't really make sense to me in the following sentence;

อันนั้นก็ไม่เป็นประมาณ เป็นประมาณอยู่ที่ความยึดมั่นถือมั่นเรียกว่ามานะ

Any ideas?

Just the sort of thing I mean. Whatever the context it says at the end 'it is a case of determination which is called called perseverance.' could you say ' that, is not a case of approximate, it is closer to will power, what we call perseverance.? Probaly 100% wrong but worth a stab. Any one else?

"Mai pen praman" in romanized Thai = "it isn't about"

These are the meaning of each words from this context.

เป็นประมาณ - knowing one's standing or merits

ยึดมั่น - to have faith in, to believe firmly.

ถือมั่น - to believe in.

มานะ - resolution

I hope this could help you understand the meaning of this context. :o

I have just run this past my partner, who knows languages, and he was puzzled by it, but came up with a similar sort of thing as me but did not use the word perseverance which I looked up in a Thai /English dictionary anyway. He said it was not written Thai and sounded like the transcript of something a monk might say which doesn't make sense written down necessarily. A monk is under pressure to keep talking and can't stop to assemble thoughts.

It was indeed something a monk would say.

It comes from Ahahn Chah's book, อาหารใจ
