Hi, just wanting some advice about hiring a nanny, we have just had our second child and that makes 2 boys under 2 years old :D:D we are wanting to hire nanny so we get some free time together not all day, but an hour here and there.

We live in Nakhon Si Thammarat and can't use the nanny service in Bangkok, but just wanted to find out how much other people pay their nanny?? we don't want a slave that works 80 hours a week, we want someone that is trustworthy and good with young children.

If anybody can give me any infomation i would be more than grateful :o

From my experience, she'll only trust a family member or someone from the village who is extended family whether related or not.

I'm not sure we could just put an ad in the local paper and hire from that.

As for pay, it depends upon duties, hours, days per week, live in / out, her skills and qualifications etc. I'd refer to her previous wage but prices seem to range here from Bt5k to Bt15k+ for nannies. There was a thread on this a few months ago.

My sister in law has worked for 12 years as a Nanny, she works full time and gets B15,000/mo taking the child from birth to 2 years then turns over to Mother. She is between jobs now and on vacation with us in Pattaya. She has no boyfriends or baggage but really would like to find a Farang husband. She mostly has worked with wealthy Thais and her sole job was taking care of baby. I found her a job a while back with Farang couple who verbally agreed to all requirements, 1 month later gardener quit show she was given that responsibility when baby was sleeping, then house keeper quit and she had to do housekeeping also all with no additional pay, next month she quit.

I suggest you make it very clear what duties are and what days and times are her own, what monthly pay will be during 90 day probation and after probation if both of you are happy.

Makes you wonder what the employers do when they have housekeepers, maids, nannies and gardeners ?

Just sit around and watch telly ?

I want someone to help out but with a bit of cleaning, cooking and baby minding. hel_l, I can take care of my daughter all day, do some work when she is taking a nap and in her stroller, make dinner after going to the market if need be, then clean up after bathing her and putting her to bed before more work and then a few hours sleep. Sure you'd be tired to do that everyday 7 days a week but the missus helps out and we just want someone to take the burden off us and to provide some occassional babysitting so we can have a night out.

erm lets see...... work???

I actually quite enjoy some housework and gardening but it doesnt make economical sense for me to spend the hours per day required to keep the house and garden how I like it. On an hourly basis my time is much better spent economically for my family if I work, add to that paying a maid, gardener, driver, nanny whatever is adding to the local economy immensely. I "out-source" (hahaha) all the house/garden work and then I can concentrate on being a great unhassled mother, a business woman, a traveller, a sailor, a tennis player, a friend, a painter, a writer bla blah bla.

Back to topic! LOL

A good nanny is very hard to find. I wouldn't recommend getting a maid/nanny as the skills you require are vastly different. having said that I have plenty of friends here who have maids that have become fantastic nannies/child carers, however I haven't been so "lucky".

I employ a Thai maid and a Filipino nanny (from Singapore - tax issue). The maid is paid 6k pm and the nanny is paid 10k but has many more perks (flights home, continuation of education, several trips to Singapore each month etc).

Hiring a Filipino was essential for me due to the English as the Mother tongue.

Thaiclan,

A bit tongue in cheek but would you have had a nanny and maid if you were in the UK, USA or Europe where their pay levels would be so much greater ?

I had a maid in Hong Kong which came with the condo. Sorry, the ability to have one, not forced upon me. My company asked what I wanted and I chose an older flipper to avoid any potential drunken assignations.

If I was a lone parent in the Uk I think I'd need one or very good daycare but that would run into the many hundreds of pounds a week. Tag on a maid and you'd have to have a very high salary one to pay it and two to justify it.

Thats not really the point is it? I mean I probably wouldn't drive a 4 litre car in the UK but do so here because the cost is so low. I moved to Asia because money affords a far greater standard of living, and that is not limited to hired help....don't get your point really.......

I also believe greatly in using my wealth to support the local people here, and if that means having more hands than really required then all the better!

There are illegal workers here as well ya know, and they tend to have more reasonable expectations than the locals. We are quite happy with our chinese in house nanny/maid in paris , and so she seems to be. She actually talked abput moving to Asia with us but I doubt she would really enjoy signing off permanently her ticket to France.

Don't need to be a lone parent to have a maid/nanny BTW, I sure expect my wife to have more sophisticated and business oriented occupations.

Now, where could we hire a nanny in BKK for a month? She doesn't actually need to speak english.
