perkie173
Hi there. One of my friends (from England) has been married to a Thai woman and been living in Thailand for 3 years. They have just had a baby boy and I am wanting to send them a gift or buy something in Thailand for them next time I am there. Are there any traditional thai gifts for new baby's and mothers? Any help is appreciated. Kind Regards
Maestro
To the best of my knowledge the traditional gift for a newborn baby in Thailand is gold, usually in the form of a gold chain. I am not sure about the gift for the mother. Perhaps a “red envelope”, which is literally a red envelope containing cash, for the diaper fund. If you don’t have a red envelope handy, any other colour will do. -- Maestro
Chopper
I had the exact same question to post until a friend also confirmed it is traditionally gold for a newborn baby and a “red envelope” containing cash as Maestro has indicated for the mother. Crossy
Yep^^^, another vote for the 'gold and envelope', looks like it's heading for a runaway victory DO NOTE however that any gold should be Thai (pure/23-24 karat) gold, Farang (18 karat) gold is not worth a light due to its reduced content of actual gold
perkie173
Thank you so much for such speedy replies. This forum is fantastic I'm so glad I found it. I shall start looking for a gold chain right away
