Hey guys hope you are all well,

Im in Melbourne at the moment and heading to Chiang Mai on the 28th of this month. I have been having a few bleeding gums problems recently and want to go to a dentist to get my teeth cleaned. I am not due to return to the UK (im british) till May so i want to get them looked at before i return home (worried about the onset of gum discease!)

I hear Grace Dental clinic is pretty good, is that true? How much will it cost for a checkup/cleaning session? If any of u guys have been there and can give any advice, i would love to hear from you!

Cheers!

Ed

I like many other TV Members use Grace regularly, they are not the cheapest but without doubt the best, costs are a fraction of what you would expect to pay back home and all the Dentists speak good English.

I am afraid I cant tell you how much a clean would be , I pay around 5,000 Baht for a root canal filling which normally requires 3-4 visits, if thats anything to go by

Grace dental clinic is one of the best, if not the best in CM. I had two root cananls done just a couple mnths ago. Very happy. Cost of their cleaning is 1200 baht, a bit high I think. Most other clinics charge 500 baht. But maybe this price includes exam and all X=rays, not sure. But for an excellent honest opnion on what problem you have and what needs to be done, I'd recommend Grace.

Hi Ed. Dental care is one of those topics that many have an interest in, hence every few weeks someone starts a new 'thread' similar to yours, which is a bit of a waste of time/bandwith.

If you go to Chiang Mai Forum, then go to bottom of page ... see Search button ... enter relevant key words like Chiang Mai, Dental, Dentist, etc ... you will find helpful reviews & comments on many/most of the dental options.

Personally I think you will be quite happy with Grace - I go there myself.

While I prefer Grace to all other options, when I found their 1200 teeth cleaning price too much,as my Thai friends only pay 400 or less, off I went to a very modern Thai clinic where the falang price was clearly indicated above the Thai price, in English, 500 vs. 400. I was taken right in, no long wait like the 400 Baht payers seem to be suffering from, and this male dentist began. It felt like his foot was used to hold by mouth open and it was not long before I was bleeding a great deal. Water everywhere, even through the bib, onto my clothes due to his Thai approach to cleaning, whether it be bathroom or your mouth, just throw buckets of water on it.

Never again. My gums have never bled when cleaned at Grace and the lady dentist is very gentle and considerate.

The "high cost" of cleaning of teeth in Thailand relative to other dental costs is partly because no one is allowed in your mouth but a dentist in Thailand, no work performed by dental hygienists. Your teeth at Grace are cleaned by a specialist in gum disease, usually, and a professor at CMU dental school.

Also, Grace uses untra sound cleaning or whatever the latest device is so there is no hand scraping except on extremely dirty teeth. I use a battery powered tooth brush and mouth wash to clean twice a day and almost every time I am in Grace, they tell my how little plaque has formed on my teeth. I am out to 9 months for cleanings, way above their standard 6 month recomendation.

I suspect the level of cleaning required varies considerably between patients so my experience may or may not be typical.

All good. Their diagnosis agreed with what I had heard in the US. They explained treatment options in detail and recommended the less expensive one. Once the work began, the dentist developed an innovative solution at a fraction of the cost of the procedure I had agreed to. It's working out fine.

Dr Jarunee is indeed gentle and considerate.

She specialises not only in dental hygeine, but also extractions.

She is not a professor at CMU dental school, but her qualifications from Germany would probably put her in a higher league.

More expensive than others yes, but 1200 baht every 6 months or so is actually quite cheap for such good service.

If 100% confidence that you are getting the right treatment professionally and caringly administered by nice people matters to you, Grace has to be at the top of anyone's list. As others have said, there are cheaper options - and varying reports about those (as chaingmaibruce says - just search and you'll find plenty).

For myself, I've had a wide range of treatments at Grace over the last few years - cleaning, whitening, bridgework, root canal treatment and most recently gum surgery. Each time, I came away impressed (and relieved). By western standards (even compared with NHS scales in UK), their fees are a steal and the treatment in all respects is 5-star. Three weeks ago, I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed - for which they bring in another specialist in addition to the in-house specialist and nurse - cost was 1,500 baht. The tooth was out in less than two minutes - I thought she was still just fitting a clamp and was bracing myself for an hour's ordeal..........but it was all over. Grace is the nearest you'll come anywhere to making a trip to the fang-factory actually enjoyable :o .

I love all my dentists at Grace. Dr. Korakat a real sweet lady and a cutie as is Dr. Chanika, but also they're extremely competent. Dr. Jarunee just did an implant this week and is really good. dentist and a nice lady. She let my wife sit in the room with me while she spent two hours drilling and ratcheting the implant in place. I've never had a more gentle cleaning, than when she does them.

I've like my visits there as does my wife. Stepson had two wisdom teeth pulled at Doi Saket hospital on the same day last week my wife had two wisdom taken out at Grace. She's fine no pain perfect healing. He still hurts. His cost 700 baht. My wife was extremely impressed with her doctor, cost was 6900 including antibiotics and pain pills

Prices are posted on their website:

My experience is that they always charge at the high end of the range.

I go to Grace, have since I moved here.

They are definitely at the high end.

Having said that, they're the best, or among the best, for a cost that is a large fraction (say 5/8ths) of what it would cost from an excellent high end dentist back in Blighty or the US. Work is Grade A.

I was just there for a deep perio cleaning. Had a root canal there, etc.

I give them a thumbs-up :o

74,000 but it included bone grafts, old tooth remnants removal, a temp denture, largest implant base, etc. They want to wait at least 8 months for graft to solidify with new bone growth, hence the need for the temp tooth. Dr. Jarunee has called in the evening to see how I'm doing if any pain etc. Really great aftercare from a quality dentist. I could not be happier with a dentist or a dental clinic :o

I'm contemplating an implant - even two; and had a query or two.

Are implants normally done by periodentologists, not oral surgeons - I thought the former were for gums? (Grace seem to have both on their staff.) Obviously I could easily be wrong in my assumption.

How many visits were needed to do the implant - following which you have the long wait for the bone to acept the implant?

Really there are there 5 visits. One the initial examination, (cost for me 1200 baht cleaning), mouth mold, xrays and consultation with Dr. Korakat who will explain your options and costs. Next will be the actual implant, which took 2 hours in my case, third will a next day brief exam, in a week stiches will be removed, and 8 months later the tooth will be inserted.

Now this is my procedure for others I know not. I get stiches removed Wednesday.

Dr. Jarunee is a Perio. and does your cleanings as well as my implant.

Oddly enough Grace doesn't charge extra for poms.

And if you don't want any poms, can you negotiate a discount?

Back on topic, I went to Grace recently for the first time, initially for a filling and later for cleaning. Like others on this topic (and the various other similar topics on the forum), my experiences there were very good and I recommend them.

Big Smile Clinic, 053 815179, does excellent work at very reasonable prices ( no double pricing). He solved my gum bleeding problems several years ago. I'm impressed by the modern facility and equipment.

HEY GUYS! Brush your teeth's and you don't have to waste your money at Grace or any other dentist :-)

But for those of us who are lazy, Grace is fine - but I hate their "from" prices .... 600-1600 for cleaning ... how can you argue when they say it was 1200, or a filling 800-2000 - same again, how to argue it was a 1k filling and not a 1,5k, it should be renamed to Grace Dental Baht Factory.

Grace! I was in the Dental lab biz in the USA. Their work is better than 95% of Docs in the USA and ,unlike them, they will not sell you what you do not need. In the USA a doc would never do only a filling if a route canal and crown would do. Kept my rice bowl full.

Grace has in house equipment far advanced of what an american doc would ever pay for, I.E., the best and most modern. They use a great lab-very nice work!

HEY KASH! What am I doing wrong? I've been brushing and flossing and spending money at dentists regularly for many years.

If someone gives you a lowball quote and then finds the job bigger or more complicated than usual, what's going to happen? Most likely you will get inadequate service that meets the quote.

p.s. I "waste" money on brake jobs, too. :o

  • 1 year later...

Don't brush 'em! Don't fuss with 'em! Quit messing with bad habits and bad genes! PULL 'EM!! Get some decent choppers and/or switch to chicken noodle soup!!

.....miso soup?

....a bouillion cube in hot water? Maybe that's it, it has been established in a previous thread that the classier restaurants in town will provide hot water at no charge! But bring your own cube! Chicken or beef!

And think svelte!!

Elite smile is worth a try.

Their web site has pictures and lists the dentists qualifications. full onfo on what is on offer. prices are transparent

it's difficult to get unbiased information in chiangmai ( or thailand) so check out a website then pay a visit unannounced.
