Not completely. There are some Consulates that will issue multi entry for more liberal reasons.

Or if the child was in a private school and you were supporting him (500k here on Phuket but heard it can vary).

I do my Non O Multiple in Switzerland in Basel every Year. I have to Show Incom and the Birthcertivicate from the Child and I get the Visa in 2 Days. The Embassy in Basel is very helpful.

Not being married seems to rule out any of the nearby options but does not rule out Oz. Last year they would issue multiple entry non immigrant visas to non Australians for quite liberal reasons. I have no more recent information.
