They're available. In Thailand, however, I'm unsure as to wether you can pick them up. They do put an awful drain on your battery though, and are meant for desktop replacement machines.

Correction: They don't use significantly more power than the 5400 models.

It's true that 7200 drives are very expensive and hard to find in Thailand though. I would recommend getting a 250GB 5400 drive instead - it will be almost as fast as the 7200/100GB drive, and it is readily available. And it has more capacity of course.

Hmm, just looked for them in Synnex pricelist, they've been there 2 months ago and now not there anymore :o

Looks like I'll have to give up on the 7200 then.

www.macsales.com deliver direct to your door in Thailand and good prices on all HD's.

Don't worry about battery life on a 7200 rpm u wont even notice the difference. however the "Feel" of the machine will be a lot lot faster over a 5.4krpm or 4.2krpm.

There is not going to be a huge difference in speed between a 100GB 7200 drive and a 250GB 5400 one. The bigger the drive, the higher the transfer rate. The faster it spins, the faster the transfer rate. 100GB/7200 vs 250GB/5400 will almost certainly be equal in xfer speed - I would even give the 250GB a slight edge here.

The 7200 RPM drive will still have much better access times. But the overall difference will be pretty small.

See here - this test compares a 160GB / 7200 drive to a 250 GB / 5400 and a 200GB / 7200. The 250 and the 160 drive are pretty much even in transfer speeds. And that is a 160GB drive which is certainly faster than a 100GB one. http://www.barefeats.com/rosa06.html

I am never a great fan of benchmark numbers but more of a how it feels comparison. For example the benchmarks of the SSD Macbook Air and HD Macbook Air are not that too different - but the overall feel of the SSD version compared to the HD version is so so different.

Nikster,

I was asking about 7200rpm IDE drives, as far as I know there are no 5400 rpm 250GB IDE notebook drives available, only SATA.

250GB 5400 RPM IDE 2.5". Not sure about in Thailand however.

Thanks, I stand corrected. They are available here

and at 4000 baht the price is reasonable too.

Cheers
