I remember some years ago that there were serious misgivings with administering the MMR jab as one dose due to, amongst other things, higher rates of autism. Now our daughter is rapidy approaching the time to decide on the first phase of this innoculation and wanted to ask the forum for their comments and experience.

The recommended time is 9-12 months though I would err to the latter end of that period.

The research by Wakefield has been totally discredited by informed sources, however it doesn't stop the media from concocting another unsafe news story.

The research was based on a small number and results doctored, if you'll excuse the pun, the research has been tried again to try and replicate the results, but without success and because of the original scare, there is now a real problem of a possible out-break of one or all three of the diseases.

There is plenty of web results, have a look and make up your own mind, I know I will.

Good Luck

And the UK is now reaping the cost of parents' failure to have their children inoculated: measles cases amongst kids are now the highest since records began.

Scouse.

The two biggest studies show no link between MMR and autism - as pointed out Dr Wakefields study has been totally dicredited and he has been struck off for it.

I work in vaccines and every Dr I work with have had their children have the MMR.

If you need the Thailand list of reccomended vaccines from the MoH or the Thai Paediatrics Society I can send it to you.

The (US) government has conceded a vaccine-autism case in the Court of Federal Claims....saying that shots resulted in a diagnosis of autism.

ANALYSIS

Medical personnel at the Division of Vaccine Injury Compensation, Department of Health and Human Services (DVIC) have reviewed the facts of this case, as presented by the petition, medical records, and affidavits. After a thorough review, DVIC has concluded that compensation is appropriate in this case.

In sum, DVIC has concluded that the facts of this case meet the statutory criteria for demonstrating that the vaccinations CHILD received on July 19, 2000, significantly aggravated an underlying mitochondrial disorder, which predisposed her to deficits in cellular energy metabolism, and manifested as a regressive encephalopathy with features of autism spectrum disorder. Therefore, respondent recommends that compensation be awarded to petitioners in accordance with 42 U.S.C. § 300aa-11©(1)©(ii).

DVIC has concluded that CHILD’s complex partial seizure disorder, with an onset of almost six years after her July 19, 2000 vaccinations, is not related to a vaccine-injury.

It is determined that an underlying mitochondrial disorder set up a predisposition which can be aggravated by immunizations, manifesting in ASD. Thousands of children with ASD have numerous underlying biological conditions that make them predisposed to deficits which in turn lead to autism.

Now it is up to the parents of the child whether the child has an underlying mitochondrial disorder. :o

Three seperate autism-related studies published within the past six weeks have given pro-vaccine groups, pharmaceutical companies and government officials a major PR victory in the tug-of-war battle between their side and anti-vaccine lobbyists, which include many parents of children with autism. Adding to the frenzy and confusion has been the false depiction by many media outlets of total vindication for vaccines and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Misleading headlines such as "Thimerosal Vaccine Proved Safe" and "Vaccine not linked to autism" have swept across newswires at a near-hysteric rate, giving the false impression that the autism-vaccine controversy has finally been laid to rest once and for all.

The attention these study results received was in stark contrast to a recently published article (see below) from the Journal of Child Neurology entitled, "Blood Levels of Mercury Are Related to Diagnosis of Autism: A Reanalysis of an Important Data Set." The report received little media fanfare when it was released several months ago, even though researchers from the University of Northern Iowa reanalyzed data from a previous study and concluded that a "significant relation does exist between the blood levels of mercury and diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder."

Then there was the ABC pilot episode of "Eli Stone," which depicted a jury awarding $5.2 million to a mother who believed her son's autism was caused by a vaccine. Despite intense pressure to cancel the program, ABC refused and the show was subsequently watched by nearly 15 million viewers.

What preceded and followed ABC's choice to air the episode was a massive campaign to neutralize public perceptions that a connection between vaccinations and autism exists.

Included in this information blitz was the release of the pro-vaccine study results. The timing of their release was neither accidental nor coincidental.

Nearly 5,000 families have brought a case before a special vaccine court and are currently attempting to demonstrate the correlation between vaccines and autism. A ruling in favor of these families would have massive implications for pharmaceutical companies, the US government and the medical community at-large.

Also widely overlooked were the sources of these studies.

One study exonerating Thimerosal as a culprit in autism was funded by the National Institutes of Health, a government-run agency that would be deeply affected if the mercury-laced preservative were to be implicated in the rise of autism. Additionally, it was reported that researchers involved in the study had been paid in the past for consulting with vaccine manufacturers.

Adding to bias concerns, another study involving the Archives of General Psychiatry disproving the mercury-autism link has been questioned by some because of the publication's apparent financial ties to vaccine manufacturers.

It is time for some objectivity to enter the autism-vaccine debate. More studies are needed involving researchers and sponsors who don't have a vested interest in the outcome of the results. Until that happens, reports that purportedly exonerate the role of vaccines in autism should be greeted with a healthy dose of skepticism and cynicism.

Those analyzing and reviewing the data, including the mainstream media, should not be so quick to jump to such sweeping conclusions until all the facts and conflicts of interest are uncovered and disclosed.

Blood Levels of Mercury Are Related to Diagnosis of Autism: A Reanalysis of an Important Data Set

The question of what is leading to the apparent increase in autism is of great importance. Like the link between aspirin and heart attack, even a small effect can have major health implications. If there is any link between autism and mercury, it is absolutely crucial that the first reports of the question are not falsely stating that no link occurs. We have reanalyzed the data set originally reported by Ip et al. in 2004 and have found that the original p value was in error and that a significant relation does exist between the blood levels of mercury and diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder. Moreover, the hair sample analysis results offer some support for the idea that persons with autism may be less efficient and more variable at eliminating mercury from the blood.

I thought that inevitable when the government of the day said that whilst the combined MMR would be free, having single innoculations would cost.

Even then, those people who spent the money down the pub or bought fags or ordered a chinese takeaway are not fit to be parents. How can you just not do something because it costs a bit. Its not like it would be £1000 or something.

So now the ex- Doctor Wakefield has been further disgraced and his research is deemed both unethical AND Fraudulent.

It also seems he failed to reveal conflicts of interest.he lodged a patent for a drug - Transfer Factor" that he claimed as a vaccine for measles and a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome. He received tens of thousands of pounds in money from solicitors hoping to pursue a case based on his research.

TBoth the Lancet and the BMJ consider his research not only poor but actually FRAUDULENT.

Unfortunately the Press as done little but exasperate the situation.

In Western countries this sort of pseudo-research is often discovered and revealed for the fraud that it is.Virtually ALL drugs companies have been found guilty of fraudulent behaviour in the US and elsewhere at one time or another - it seems they will do just about anything to turn a profit.

what I find most disconcerting about this is that in Thailand there is no sophisticated system for checking medical practices of any kind yet most expats and medical tourists display a naive blind faith in the services they receive here.

If this kind of scandal can erupt in UK with all the sophisticated checks and balances there, imagine how many get away with it in Thailand.

Countries like Thailand are becoming magnets for all those "Doctors" and "researchers" who have been discredited elsewhere. They can set up here on the medical fringe and if hospitals or drug companies can see a profit they vcan continue their "quackery" over here without any legal interference.
