March 6, 200818 yr Bangkok Post, General news >> Thursday March 06, 2008 Quote :- COMMENTARY Heartlessness spurs La-iad to greater efforts SANITSUDA EKACHAI It was a heart-breaking sight. The twin babies were crying loudly, their bodies writhing in pangs of hunger, trying to reach for their mother behind bars. The mother, La-iad Onsa-sard, had been arrested along with four other Udon Thani villagers for opposing the mammoth potash mining project that will destroy their community. Despite her tearful pleas, the police refused to let her out of the cell to breastfeed her twins, even though she was only waiting for bail. ''My babies were only two months old. They cried until their bodies turned blue,'' she recalled, tears welling in her eyes. ''But the police just told me coldly that if I wanted to nurse my babies, they must be in jail too.'' That was when La-iad realised that she was not only fighting against the mining company, but the heartlessness of the authorities and mainstream society against the poor's struggles to save their environment. Such heartlessness has made her even more determined to continue the fight. ''We must save the future of our children,'' she said firmly. Unquote. To read this disturbing article that gives one example / sad account of indifference that goes on daily towards the lesser priviledged of Thai society. Ref.url :- http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/06Mar2008_news96.php WHY DO THOSE IN POSITIONS OF POWER AND TRUST ALLOW AND BY IGNORING IT HAPPENS, CONSEQUENTLY CONDONE WHAT HAPPENS ?????? After all, the officials in priviledged positions ( Gov. reps. in particular ) are forever saying ALL society counts when seeking election marshbags.... and : ened P.S. I would hope that she and her babies are now in a more healthy position and the story has a happy ending for them. Edited March 6, 200818 yr by marshbags
March 6, 200818 yr No matter how much money there is in this country, it is THIRD WORLD nonetheless and compassion is about as mythical as that "jai yen yen" crap.
March 6, 200818 yr Very disturbing story, but I wonder what the police version would be? Bangkok Post's version: Despite her tearful pleas, the police refused to let her out of the cell to breastfeed her twins, even though she was only waiting for bail.''My babies were only two months old. They cried until their bodies turned blue,'' she recalled, tears welling in her eyes. ''But the police just told me coldly that if I wanted to nurse my babies, they must be in jail too.'' Police version: Despite our pleas, she refused to let the police take her babies into the cell to be breastfed.''Her babies were only two months old. They cried until their bodies turned blue,'' the police spokesman recalled, tears welling in his eyes. ''But she told me coldly that she would never nurse the babies inside the jail.''
