With the greatest of respect, I am not convinced this deals with my point. I was confused regarding the use of a third person pronoun in the first person. I have often seen the pronoun เขา written as เค้า as the latter reflects its pronunciation in informal speech. This is an entirely separate issue. Perhaps the writer was indeed writing in the third person correctly and was indeed referring to another person whose, had we got the whole message, identity would be obvious. Alternatively, the writer's nickname is เขา "mountain" or "horn".

I think some people do use the third-person pronoun when referring to themselves at times. It's not so unusual if you consider that when Thais use their own name, instead of the first-person pronoun, that too is a third-person reference.

Perhaps it is akin to the English use of "you" in the general sense, but not really as a second-person pronoun, as in: "what do you call it?" In that case, the meaning is actually the implied passive "what is it called?" - because you are not necessarily asking the other person directly what he/she calls it, but rather are thinking aloud as you search for the proper word. And unless I'm mistaken, some Thais may express that idea as เค้าเรียกว่าอะไร instead of เรียกว่าอะไร

I hope that's not too confusing, or off the mark. I'm starting to confuse myself...

it's just another one of the available sets of 'me-you' terms. eg.

ผม-คุณ

เรา-นาย

ข้า-เอ็ง

กู-มึง

ผม-ท่าน

ฉัน-เธอ

เขา-เอ็ง

each one is appropriate for a given set of situations. เขา-เอ็ง is fairly rare and only used between partners or people (say, friends) who share a very close relationship. that's my understanding, perhaps others can add more.

ps. there was a movie a while back called "โคตรรักเอ็งเลย". the title would translate to something like "dam_n i love you" [โคตร here means 'very' but be aware that it's considered rude in many situations]. if you watch that movie you'll hear plenty of เขา-เอ็ง talk.

Thank you for that. I've never heard it before. In fact I've had very little experience of เอ็ง also. There was one girl I knew who always called her younger sister เอ็ง but herself ฉัน. Something new every day.

thanks virin. my mistake, เค้า - ตัวเอง are indeed the lovey-dovey terms used in the movie i mentioned. an example:

ตัวเองรู้ไหม ว่าเค้ารักตัวเองแค่ไหน
