Interior minister agrees with 1 day ban on street stalls

BANGKOK: -- Interior minister Chalerm Yoobamrung was in agreement with a ban on street-side stalls on one day a week and recommended it should be any day of the week, not necessarily on Mondays.

Speaking about the prime minister’s plan to allow vendors to set up street-side stalls on a Monday, he said he agreed in principle vendors should allow one day a week for cleaning of the city’s streets.

But the vendors should be allowed to decide themselves what day was best for them as sales were good on a Monday only in some areas, according to Mr. Chalerm.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) bans vendors from setting up street stalls on a Monday to provide more room for pedestrians and enable authorities to clean pavements.

why don't the vendors clean the area around their own stalls. wouldn't this solve the problem?

Look hear now - I am the new Interior Minister so i will come up with some ludicrous scheme to show who's boss; and i am the new police chief so i will close the bars early for no good reason - and the little kitty armband scheme was such a great idea.

New chiefs - new lunacy - lunatics have taken over again!

People generally like the day off - it keeps the streets clean. Vendors, on the other hand, want to sell their stuff everyday.

Before Samak became Bangkok governor day off was on Wednesdays but Samak quickly abolished it. Apirak reinstated it on Mondays, now Chalerm looks like he is supporting him but Samak is again the one who doesn't want it.

If they could only mind their own business and leave BMA to do their jobs. Samak should have run in governor's elections if he still wants to manage Bangkok street vendors. Instead he excused himself from the race due to extremely poor results.
