I would like to know if the are any other minimums than 50,000 baht per month for a farang to obtain a work permit? I recall a friend who told me he earned 35,000 baht. As he said the shortcoming with that was that he had to do visaruns every 3 month.

Thanks.

The salary requirement isn't for the work permit, it's to qualify for an "extension of stay" based on business. Different nationalities require different amounts.

What your friend tells you is correct!

The minimum salaries required by the labour department varies mainly based on what your job description is (management, training, aide...), and can be quite a bit lower then what is needed to get a 1 year extension.

Immigration requires a European national to earn and pay taxes on at least 50,000 Baht/month before said foreigner qualifies for a 1 year extension based on employment (additionally the employer also has to fulfill quite a bit of requirements).

If you don't qualify for a 1 year extension (i.e. salary to low), two scenario's are possible:

1) you have a multiple entry non immigrant visa, in which case you do a border run every 90 days, followed by bringing your work permit back into sync with your allowed in Thailand until date. ( work permits generally are valid till the same date you are allowed to stay in Thailand by immigration, you have I think a 7 day window to bring your WP back into sync after the validity expires, after that the complete WP is lost and you would have to completely re-apply for one).

2) You only have a single entry non immigrant visa: you'll have to travel every 90 days to a city abroad where there is a Thai embassy or consulate, and apply for a new non immigrant visa. This should be granted based on you holding a work permit. In neighboring countries, you'll most probably only get a single entry, so the procedure will have to be repeated every 3 months! Again, follow up with bringing your WP back into sync with your visa status...
