following on from a previous thread concerning stereotypes and prejudices my mind wandered to this much maligned landmark, a truly unique hotel in terms of its patrons, race colour creed or religion are irrelevant visitors drawn from all over the world, meeting, mixing and coexisting in a common purpose that must be the envy of the united nations, proving indeed that man can live side by side, perhaps even serving as a role model for many of the worlds trouble spots.

now my question is, when you hear someone is staying at the nana hotel, what is your first reaction,

a, a smirk followed by a wry smile.

b. omg, a cheap charlie how can you stay in such a dump, is this based on hearsay or actual experience of the hotel? lets remember for some visitors its not exactly cheap, and the true cheap charlies would probably be stuck in some flop house or flea pit hotel resembling uncle rays guest house,(for those who dont remember, it was located at the back of the dynasty inn) another now long gone retreat for the financially challenged

c. sex tourist?, bear in mind the hotel was there before the fantasy world of the nana plaza.

d. oh you poor thing?, get out of there asap, and take it up with your travel agent when you return home, they have no scruples if they sent you there.

i must admit, my initial reactions would be a followed by c, does this make me a bigot, do i need some sort of professional therapy to cure me of such prejudices?

are there any other reactions i may have missed?

a friend of mine , visiting bangkok from london , stayed there for 5 days in january ,

clean rooms , efficient but not overly friendly service , good location and very good price , fantastic for people watching 24hrs a day.

this non judgemental middle aged woman loved the place and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

she was fascinated by the way grown men can become besotted , attentive and like little puppy dogs when in the company of thai women and reckons that western women could learn a lot from these girls !!

she particularly enjoyed breakfast time.

She didn't have her cam-corder out by any chance. :o

I used to stay there on a fairly regular basis. The last time I tried, the desk clerk asked for my passport. I don't normally carry it and didn't have it. I instead gave him my Thai driver's license. That wasn't good enough even though I had my Thai wife with me. He wouldn't allow her to sign in with her Thai ID card either even though she had changed her last name to mine. I told him to never mind and that I would go across the street to the Dynasty. NO! I won't stay there again. The more I thought about it the more it irritated me. I had no problem at the Dynasty.

Some people get no pleasure from acting high society. Some people actually appreciate the real Bangkok and have nothing to prove to anyone. :o

tons of Thais speaking broken english to tourists trying to sell them stuff

kids coming up to you with flowers when they should be in school

an above average number of beggars missing limbs, etc, since its a tourist area the begging mafia sets up all the hard cases and the women who has a different baby every other week who has a new puppy every other week

the smell of urine

unattractive, abrasive young women yelling at you.

one tout after another offering you sex

too many tourists walking around drunk talking about what they did last night, or what they are going to do shortly when the BTS security guard interrupts them to say that they have to throw away their beer leo before boarding the train.

too many tourists stumbling around with girls who look miserable next to them.

All the Thais in this area are there to make money off of tourists. it makes for a nauseating experience.

Well I suppose one man's hel_l is another man's heaven. :D

Just for the record:

Nana hotel sucks. The disco in the back is fun. Dynasty hotel is good. The little hotel on the corner run by Indians is nice, alas no car park. Raja hotel is full of rats and smells of stale curry.

Soundman. :o

calling the nana area "the real bangkok" is hysterical since the only Thais in this area are there to hustle tourist. And I don't remember hearing the words "You want girl. Sex. Massage Sir" anywhere esle in Bangkok. I guess everywhere else is the unreal bangkok and the tourist/red light districts are the real bangkok....

this area throws the horrors of humanity into your face. its not my cup of tea. i prefer my rosy world of university educated Thais and The Emporium, but i guess that makes me the enemy.

well regardless, one thing that is certain is that you will not find an attactive women anyone near sukhumwit soi 4.

I do admire that you have taken a stand on your preferences of what you want to see in Bkk. :o

However, there are literally 100's of "red light districts" in Bkk. In addition to this, an evening stroll near most landmark areas or major restaurant vicinities in Bkk will get you "Hey you want girl, quickly quickly, have room, you want smoke 150B etc." on any night of the week. Difference is the "personal sales pitches" are being thrown towards you in Thai slang language.

Getting back to topic.

I would not reccomend Nana hotel to anyone unless everywhere else is full.

Soundman.

i have been to ratachada many times and have never had anyone walk up to me on the street and offer me sex. i'm not sure which non tourist areas you are talking about where this happens. what do you mean "major restaurant vicinities"?

fwiw, i have no problem with prostitution, or what people do behind closed doors, but the nana area puts it all out into the open, and i understand that many of you are passed the age where you care how you present yourself or what other people think of you, or have any more pride, etc... i am just not there yet... maybe in 40 years. and its not possible for me to say this without sounding like a total jerk, but watching a 60 year old dude bounce around with a village girl dressed in rags with too much make up saying stuff to him like "you want melon yes?" gives me an uneasy feeling.... i actually get an even more nauseous feeling when i see those old farang women with the Thai males. Its just disgusting to think about old people holding hands with young people and sucking face in the middle of the street.... but alas, i am sure these are more own personal insecurities and not your own. carry on, i have not visited the area more than a handful of times and not in more than 3 years.

Assuming the person in question is a single male then "A" definetly A, you haven't been to BKK untill ya hit the whole Nana area.

You may need a reality check. I never seen a Thai girl "Suk face on the street"

You seem to be quite well acquainted with the area. How long has your mate forbidden you to go to that dismal area. :D

Nana could be all of the above, however the times that I have stayed there it was very nice, food very good, service good, room clean, etc, no complaints here. :D:o:D:D

i actually think i am being unfair here. it is probably just personal preference and many guys i guess are turned on by the dirtiness of it all. being offered sex from a dirty man wearing dirty clothing with a weird look on his face... thats pretty much the last thing in the world that would turn me on, but others might be different. others might get off thinking to themselves "i wonder if she has an STD"... i honestly have no idea. i once typed the wrong url into my browser and saw all kinds of unpleasantness ... to each their own i say.

Realmadrid you seem to know a lot about Nana and must have spent a fair bit of time there in the past.

My guess is youre either lying through your teeth and do go there for the ladies, or you go to places full of freelancers and deny it to yourself that the girl you pull is with you for your devastating wit, exotic western looks and undeniable charm, and are too tight to pay her.

Nana Hotel is an absolute flee pit, i stayed there 1 night a few years ago and had to check out first thing as the room was a tad too smelly, the bar attached to it is the best place in the world for people watching IMO.

It all depends on what a person sees and what they want to notice. I've been visiting lower Sukhumvit for over fifteen years because I like it, it has character and is a great place to people watch (don't you dare tell me I need to get a life on my own). Stay in the Dynasty Grande, go have a game a pool in the Hillary Bar and a beer at the Nana Hotel bar (outside) and you'll see it all. Ignore the idiots and the people who try to sell you things you don't want to buy, you'll have a much more interesting and rewarding experience than the Emporium could ever offer. It's for those reasons that I would never go to Soi 33 because it's really just an upmarket and more expensive version of lower Sukhumvit but without the character.

All I can say to that one is, you are either walking in the middle of the road, or as ugly as a bent shovel.

I'm no oil painting, but I get propositioned in MBK, Emporium on the Skytrain and on just about every street in Bangkok.

By way of a change I stayed out at a small Thai hotel a while ago in the back blocks of Pahonyathin, and there wasn't a foreigner within miles. I got back to my room late, and the floor duty maid asked where was my girlfriend. I replied I didn't have one and was here on business. "I can have one here in ten minutes" she said.....I was closer to eight when she arrived :D

No matter where you go......You will get asked!!!

Yes I do stay at the Nana on occasions :o

I stay at the Nana every time I visit Bangkok.

Clean rooms with a fridge, good aircon and English TV, a nice, clean swimming pool and huge jakuzzi and huge, free buffet breakfast for about 1,300 and right in the middle of everything and crawling with freindly girls.

Nowhere else comes close for the price!

Have you ever considered you are in the wrong country?

So in between stalking young women at the Emporium what is it you do at Nana, dare I hazzard a guess at missionary work?

I agree about mistyping URLs, gets you onto porno sites all the time. Same philosophy for the people that try dope but didn't inhale. :o
