How To Get Rid Of The "my Documents" Trap

Featured Replies

When I want to save something from the internet ie7 always thinks I want to save it to My documents, My pictures, My music etc... I never use these folders (they sound silly like a toddler that says : these are MY cookies MY candies video's etc) but always save to c:/temp where everyting is collected and maybe distributed to other folders. How can i change this for ever?

Get Firefox.

Unfortunately it's a long time since I used IE much, however in IE5 & {early} 6 you could add a registry entry, but with XP & Vista the My Documents and now Documents {with a hidden My Documents for compatibility} make it more problematic. You could download IE7 Pro, and add on manager for IE7 which includes free add blocking, and includes the ability to select image destination.

Alternatively, if you set up the directories through %userProfile% that should solve the problem.

Start ->

My Documents -> Click Target {or Location in Vista} -> type path to folder -> OK

Regards

PS AS I noted it's a while since I did this in the wild but this should force the profile data to point to the correct directory.

PPS Firefox is an option...
