Cashing Amex Traveller's Cheques Overseas

Featured Replies

Hi,

I purchased American Express traveller's cheques (valued in Australian dollars) for a holiday to Australia.

I know you can cash traveller's cheques 'commision free' .

But, does that mean cashing the cheques is 'fee-free'?

Could anyone clear this up for me?

Thanks for reading,

The Raja

:o I haven't cashed them in a while....but I'm pretty sure you will have to pay a fee. I don't know how much but I don't think it is that much. They will call it a "service charge".

Some banks have an agreement with a certain travelers checks company to cash their checks instead of other companies. Offhand, I don't know what bank would preferably cash American Exoress checks. If you ask around you might find the Thai bank who has such a deal with AMEX. The service fee might be a little bit less at that bank than other banks. Also, the fee will probably be charged per check, not per amount cashed. Therefore, larger denomination checks are better than smaller denomination checks.

Thanks IMA_FARANG for your reply.

The "service charge" bit is what I dread, especially in Australia.

I know in Thailand there is a 30 baht fee for cashing a single cheque.
