Just a quickie. Waiting for my wife's visa to Australia. But, curious about our daughter. I have had to many hassles(witnesses ect) to get her Australian passport.

My question is, she has Australian citizenship. Is it just a matter of getting a stamp in her Thai passport or better to apply for an Australian passport. My logic tells me that she is an aussie citizen so how could they refuse stamping a visa ?

Get the Aussie Passport it opens more doors than a Thai one (IMHO).

agreed.my thai wife uses an aussie passport.not having to waste time to get visas and thus being able to go any where on a whim is a great benefit.

350torana, I think they misunderstood your question. Yes, to enter Australia your daughter needs an Australian passport. If she enters on a Thai passport then she will be treated as a Thai citizen and will need a visa. Get her the Australian passport before you go to Oz.

No misunderstanding sbk, was just keeping the reply short.

She is an Oz citzen so why not get the passport for her, Dual nationality is allowed now so why not, it does open a lot more doors.

As a Citizen of Australia she has the right to enter her country freely and unencumbered and without the need of a visa.

I can understand the Oz officials not wanting to stamp a Thai passport, she would be subject to the conditions that apply to all Thais on visa issues.

350, what was the process you went through to get her Aussie citizenship?

I am going to be doing the same in a few weeks, only we will be in Aus.

350,

As an australian citizen it is the law that she enters Australia on an Australian PP (unless very rare and exeptional circumstances apply).

The embassy officials won't stamp her Thai PP with an Australian visa for this reason. She will have to leave Thailand on the Thai PP and enter Oz on the Aussie PP. In the long run, having the OZ PP will provide better value in terms of time and money, as you wont have to queue/pay for visas for her when she wants to travel to 98% of countries in the world.

Tukyleith.

Can't remeber all the details about getting my child's citizenship.. But, it involved, birth certifactes(translations in english), my passport and a week's wait when I came back to the embassy to pick up her Aussie citz certifacate(which i can't spell). I imagine it would be even easier in Australia, just remember to the birth cerft and english translation .

It's a process called "citizenship by decent", I have done this for 2 of my sons born overseas and it does involve birth certificates and stuff.

I suggest you contact DIMA when you get to Oz or get onto their web site now to set the wheels in motion.
