Report South Korean National Wanted for Fraud Arrested in Vietnam
Picture courtesy of Vietnam News Authorities in Vietnam's Lâm Đồng province have apprehended a South Korean national, Hong Sangwoo, 38, who was internationally wanted for his involvement in a transnational fraud ring. Local police confirmed Hong's arrest on Thursday, marking a significant effort in international law enforcement collaboration. Hong was a significant figure within a scam network operating out of Cambodia. He played a crucial role in recruiting and training South Korean individuals and offering interpretation support to Chinese members involved in the fraudulent operations. The group duped victims by impersonating representatives from the legitimate UK-based asset management firm, Janus Henderson Group. Using the popular messaging app KakaoTalk, they promoted false investment schemes, tantalising targets with promises of high returns and complete safety. The sophisticated fraud was furthered by instructing victims to install a counterfeit stock trading app, ultimately allowing the scammers to seize assets illicitly. The total losses from this deceitful scheme are estimated at around seven billion South Korean won, equivalent to approximately US$5.1 million. In light of these activities, INTERPOL issued a Red Notice for Hong on September 6, 2024, under charges corresponding to Article 347 of South Korea’s Penal Code, relating to fraud. South Korea formally reached out to Vietnamese authorities on April 18, 2025, seeking assistance in Hong's capture. In response, the Ministry of Public Security in Vietnam directed Lâm Đồng police to conduct a detailed investigation, leading to the successful identification and arrest of Hong. He has since been handed over to the Ministry for further legal proceedings, to be handled in accordance with international legal standards. This arrest highlights the effective cross-border cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the continued commitment to addressing international crime networks. The capture of Hong Sangwoo is a step forward in dismantling such fraudulent operations and ensuring justice for the affected victims. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Vietnam News 2025-06-06 -

Clash of the Titans: Trump and Musk's Public Fallout Sends Shockwaves Through Washington
Musk's fortune at its peak was estimated to be $500 billion. His business was based on innovation in coming up with products people wanted. He has shown a lot of resilience in averting bankruptcies of several businesses he started. He has a BA in physics, and a B Sc in economics. Trump's fortune is anywhere between $2 billion and $6 billion, and seems to be based mainly on cheating people. He has a string of failed businesses behind him. He has a B Sc in economics from the same school, and has sued Wharton to prevent his grades being public knowledge. Question is, who is more likely to be right about the Big Beautiful Bill, and its effect on US debt? My money is on Musk. -

Crime Man Arrested in Bình Thuận over Alleged Murder of Child
Picture courtesy of Vietnam News In Bình Thuận Province, a 25-year-old man, Đỗ Đức Bình, has been detained by the local Investigation Police on suspicion of murder. The arrest followed approval from the provincial People's Procuracy and comes amidst ongoing investigations into a tragic incident involving the death of a young child. The case unfolded on May 27 when police in Mũi Né Ward, Phan Thiết City, received a report from Ngô Thị Loan, a 35-year-old mother. Loan reported that her three-year-old daughter appeared to have been abused. Earlier that day, Loan found her daughter unconscious when attempting to wake her and rushed her to Bình Thuận General Hospital for emergency medical assistance. Medical staff at the hospital identified numerous serious injuries on the child’s body, prompting an urgent transfer to Children’s Hospital No.1 in Ho Chi Minh City for further treatment. Sadly, despite the efforts of medical professionals, the child succumbed to severe brain trauma, passing away on May 28. Loan had recently separated from her spouse and was living with Bình, alongside her daughter. During questioning, Bình confessed to the authorities that he lost his temper and struck the child repeatedly after being disturbed by her crying while he attempted to sleep. As further investigations proceed, the community is grappling with the shock of this incident, highlighting the grave consequences of domestic violence. Authorities are thoroughly probing the circumstances to ensure justice is served in this heart-wrenching case. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Vietnam News 2025-06-06
