I need to purchase a desktop replacement laptop. I want real top of the line specs and weight is not an issue. I am ready to spend up to 150-200,000 THB.

I have never had a Mac, but also consider the new Mac Book Pro 17" fully loaded.

However, as I move between work desktop, work laptop (when travelling), and my private one, I think I would be more at easy with windows OS, as I consider my Scan Drive USB falsh drive a precious tool it will be hard to be without (yes, I know Mac can also run windows, but then the point is gone, I feel)

I have been looking at the Dell XPS M2010 and Dell Precision M6300 and several Toshibas, and also fully loaded Vaio's. The Dell's seems hard to get if not impossible, and I am not really a Toshiba fan. Up to know I have always had the (at the time of purchase) top of the line and custom configured Vaios.

However, living here in Thailand it is not much use to search the net for the latest and top of the line models, because in many cases they are simply no available.

So, my question is: Are there any computer savvy folks here that could reccomend the best top of the line desktop replacement laptop on the market available here (in Phuket or Bangkok), where to find it and what price?

I would really appreciate some assistance! Thanks a lot in advance!

Saw a Toshiba for something like 120k at the big IT store on the top floor of Panthip a while ago but I don't know that there is a big demand in Thailand for laptops over 100k let alone approaching 200k. Hardware House sometimes have HP's costing over 100k. You could always try the Sony retail shop as Sony have never been shy about charging high prices for their products :o

Dell do have the M6300 on their Thai website. Have you tried giving them a call? Otherwise if you can afford 200k for a laptop then order one from Singapore and go and collect it when it's ready.

Alienware or something top of the line from Fujitsu or Lenovo would be my guess if you don't want a MacBook Pro. Or a MacBook Air with the SSD! :o

Hi

Look at Asus or Sony

Yes, I am actually looking in to the more "desktop" style L series, but again, the top model;s are not available in Thailand. Asus I am not familiar with at all!

Yes, I have had a look at that one, the second version(?) but after having searched Asus around the net I found an Asus with even better specs, but now I can not find back to it:-(

I am really very intersted in the Dell M6300 and XPS M2010, more the latter actually as the desktop feel appeals to me. i will try to give them a ring over Songkran, but as I have read in other threads i do not expect much from that phonecall. Singapore could be an option... but it is the guarantee and service issue.

Alienware is good, but not really as big as I want it... I prefer large display. Lenovo custom build could be an option but again, not here in Thailand.

With such a budget for a laptop is shipping an issue?

Apart from possible guarantee and service issues, shipping would not be an issue.

If it involved shipping, it would probably also then involve duties which could drive the price up a lot.

Thank you so much everyone! I guess I should be a little more specific, but simply Top of the Line specs is what i look for.

I need serious storage space, minimum 250GB, (Yes, know of and have wireless external drives, with plenty of GB+)

Minimum 7200 hard drive speed

I need latest processor (like Intel Duo 2 Extreme or better)

2,4 GHz minimum

Minimum 2GB memory but preferrable 4GB

Top End Video Graphics card

Minimum 256MB dedicated video memory

3-5 USB 2.0 ports

LAN with latest 802.11 n

Minimum 17" high res screen

+ all the other necessary and un-necessary things like bluetooth, blue-ray, high res camera, dedicated numeric area etc etc.

All this and more I can get from Dell, but the problem is getting it here:-( Anyone have experience with shopping from Dell in Singapore?

Apart from this I guess I have to admit that I am a bit of a Sony freak (unfortunately) but can not build Vaios here:-(

Just ship one here

pricejapan.com (I think you can spec any Vaio on Sony Japan page and have it shipped via this site)

or

I understand you want Windows but don't really understand why... USB drives work on Mac OS X?! Maybe it's because of the difficulty of sharing information across multiple machines? Depending on what you need to do, it could be viable or not, e.g. if you just have a documents folder (on the flash drive) and iMap email (email stored server side) it would be easy.

Just asking b/c a MBP 17" maxed out will blow away any Windows laptop performance-wise, simply because OS X can convert all that raw hardware speed into real life performance much more efficiently than either Vista (buggy/slow) or XP (doesn't deal well with lots of RAM). I agree that getting a MBP in order to run Windows full time doesn't make sense, better to get a real Windows PC in that case.
