Backup With Ftp

Featured Replies

I just thought by myself yesterday...as I have my own domain, this would be a good location to store files a back-up on a remote server. As the office computer is anyways up and running 24/7 and so is the ADSL connection, there must be some software out there that could perform such task scheduled over night.

Any recommendations?

Have a look at Microsoft Groove and Jungledisk. I doubt that Groove would handle multi-gig backup files but it is a great option if you just want to mirror selected folders across several machines (but not a webserver) rather than your whole computer. Jungledisk can handle large files and has a remote backup feature via FTP using Amazon's S3 remote storage. However, one problem you may face is connection speed - if your backups are in the tens of gigs range then it may not be feasible to upload them to anywhere. Especially if your ISP resets your ADSL connection every day!

thanks for the answer! The volume is maybe 10 GB and as I have my own domain, I would prefer using this one instead of someone else's. Non-M$ products would be preferred.... :o

Unless you make that online storage area secure - you are effectively publishing your backup online for all to read. It is amazing what you can find when you go looking for data that people forget is important to them that they would prefer other people not to see, pop into any internet cafe used by tourists and you will see banking details, personal letters and pictures - the same it true of some places online. Same is true if you search on personal sounding file names with the P2P applications like Limewire, Bearshare etc. I know I have strayed a bit from your subject - but I would think twice before doing this based on security of your data.

The upload speed is also an issue as well as the data flow (bandwidth use) limits that your ISP will impose.

You do not 'need' to backup 10GB every time - doing an incrimental backup will save time and reduce your bandwidth use.

The use of remote online storage is something I know about from a SAN I used to work with, it is very good for data security if you have secure dedicated encrypted links (2 GB in our case) and the need for instant restores or recovery.

On a domestic front, buy a couple of USB2 portable hard drives. One in the safe at home and one somewhere else. Use a father, grand father, son rotation. (If you have a home LAN play with network based remote HDDs, put it in the bedroom away from your computer.) HTH

One of the top FTP Clients > WS_FTP Pro can do scheduled backup, file encryption, synchronization, etc.

Can't say ive tried it myself but : http://www.primasoft.com/ftp.htm

And like others have noted, you wouldnt want to back up the entire 10 gig every night, just the files that have been modified.

There are probably programs out there that would do it, but most likely not free.

You could do the same with a batch script that keeps a log of modification dates, compresses and adds files to an upload queue.

For that size file you will probably need to set up your FTP space on a server within Thailand, otherwise international connection speed will probably make it unfeasible.

Jungle disk sends files over encrypted link and has an option to store data in encrypted form as well. It's pretty cool and pretty cheap. I agree putting your backup in a web-accessible location is crazy unless it is strongly encrypted with a very (very!) strong password.

thanks for all your input!

The data security is for sure an issue, thanks for pointing that out! Will have a look at the software suggested and decide later

Check if your hosting provider allows data storage ....
