Hi, I have 2 Golden Retriever female dogs,i would like to get them spayed,I am looking for a good veterinary clinic in Pattaya,I have heard some vets do the op without putting the dogs to sleep, some vets say its 1000 baht and the dog goes home the same day, some say around 4500 baht and the dog stays with them for 5 days.I would much rather take them to a vet someone can recommend that has had there dog spayed at and is happy that the dog was well cared for,the price is not a problem, the dogs welfare is more important.Thankyou to anyone who can advise...

first of all, a spay is a same day operation; some vets only cut the ovaries (my vet whom i work with); others do a full hysterectomy; others only do that if the bitch is pregnant at the time.

she cannot be spayed while in heat; no decent vet will do that, as they (the bitch in the operation) bleeds heavily and it causes problems...

the anesthesia is a short lived type as the operation itself is quick; an incision, the tubes are tied or the womb etc taken out; ends tied off, and the three layers sewn up. my vet uses self absorbing stitches; the bitch gets a shot before or after the surgery for pain, and also 24 hr antibiotic. she should get some antibiotic pills for a few days after. if the stitches are self absorbing, then u go home and that is the end of it: the bitch is not allowed to play rough or jump around for a few days, and u have to check the stitches for soreness or 'wetness'... other then that, its easy peasy.

if its removable stitches, then back to the vets when told, to remove them or u can do it your self its really easy.

the first day or so, she may feel woozy from the anesthesia and not want to eat too much, she should be back to normal by the second day.

no need for five days unless your dog is a total farm yard dog and u cant keep her someplace clean for three days (so she isnt lying in the muck or danger of flies laying eggs in incision... even my farm dogs were closed in a clean stall for three days after their spaying and the male nuetered.

if they are in heat, u can let them run with the males, get preggers and then do it with pups before they are well developed and the mom 'feels and seems' like a mom i.e with milk etc. (not sure all vets will do this, buddhist vets might not?)... a bit not nice, but a possibility. or keep them in for the three weeks til they are totally finished with the heat.

Can't help you with a vet in Pattaya. Maybe put a post on the Pattaya forum as well?

As for the spaying; when I have a female spayed at the kennel, then it is no food and water in the morning (or at least 6 hours before operation). Got to admit that with the water I do cheat a little; the dogs stay in their kennels at night, so when I let them out in the morning the dog is allowed to drink a bit. Then between 9 and 11 am I deliver him/her at the vet, where they do a health check. I leave him/her there and collect again in the late afternoon or evening. Normally the dog is up and about by the time I come to collect the dog with the accompanying antibiotics.

The vet normally puts a sort of sticky bandage on the incision. No need to clean the wound (provided the dog doesn't make the wound wet or dirty). The vet asks to bring the dog back for a check up and clean the wound after three days. With a new sticky bandage on the wound, of you go home again with the dog (I normally don't go after three days as I can clean the wound myself). Four days later back to the vet to get the stiches out, or not if the wound hasn't closed 100% yet. If that's the case, it means another roundtrip in two days or whatever the vet tells me.

Most bithces are ready to go within 1 or two days after the operation. But it is important, as Bina already said, to refrain the dog from running and jumping the first couple of days and, of course, no swimmig or lying in the water. (this can be difficult for a golden :D).

Some dogs will lick the wound or pull the bandage of (some even want to pull the stiches out :o). Naturally, this should be prevented, which you can do by putting an Elizabeth collar on (that is a big plastic collar that covers the whole head, if you know what I mean). Vets usually sell these things.

If you feel uncomforable with doing the after-care yourself, then it is best to leave the dog at the vet till the wound is closed.

I used the NaJomtien Animal Hospital, for my bitch and dog to be done, they also saved their lives when someone put chicken laced with strychnine over our wall prior to an attempted break in.

the vets is located on the right hand side of Sukumvit heading for Rayong about 2 klm past Tesco opposite the Greenway Driving Range above the vets are three adverting signs coloured green blue red.

The phone number is 038-757019 open 24 hours

It may depend on your loco, but I have two mongrel bitches. It cost 600 Baht for the op. Full knock out and medicine for after.

nienke,

most vets here use absorbable stitches and no need for bandages, removing stitches, or collars; in the past four months ive been helping with spays about three /four a day, no returnees for infections or problems.... even the ones that were pyometras (infected uteruses that HAD to do the spay)...

we do a 12 hour fast but water up til the operation... it helps them being hydrated well to get out of the anesthesia: we use zoleteil shot in the vein, the dog is awake 20 minutes later, and ready and walking after four hours after post op care... we do a kidney function and heart check before hand always...

thailand still uses removable stitches and bandages??

From what the vet told me removable stitches are cheaper and, therefore, used more. Not sure, if they do use more solvable stitches for strays etc. The rescue people told me but I forgot.

Also they told what anesthesia they use, but again I forgot.

Not very helpfull, sorry.

Thankyou very much for your helpful replies everyone,I am going to try the vets at na jomtien,i have been to talk with them today and will probably take the dogs tomorrow for the ops,as regards the stitches, out of all 5 vets ive visited they have all told me the dogs would have to come back a few days later to remove the stitches. So it looks like this is still common practise in Thailand.I will ask the vet if he can use disolvable stitches. Thanks again....

Just to update, the dogs where spayed on Wednesday,i asked the vet if he could use disolvable stiches,he said he can,no problem,i used the 24 hour animal hospital at na Jomtien. The vet i spoke to spoke very good english. The price for the 2 dogs was 4.015 baht including tick and flea injections and plastic collars,1 overnight stay and antibiotics for the next few days,on the whole i think the service was very good.Today the dogs have brightend up and seem to be improving,as the last 2 days they where very subdued from the op and the anasthetic, hopefully another few days and they'l be back to normal....

two days is about right for the full affects of it all to wear off: dehydration usually being the main reason for the sluggishness...

good for u...

Glad to hear all went well. You say dogs had injections for ticks and fleas. Presumably this was a preventative measure. If you are sure that it was by injection please can you give me more information as I understood that only thing available is the liquid that is applied once a month to the skin usually at back of neck.

It is good to take preventative measures against ticks as they can cause babiasis and/or erlichiasis (? spelling) - both horrible diseases. Check dogs every day for ticks and remove them being careful to remove the heads. Don't squash the ticks. I never know what to do with them so I flush them down the toilet.

good that your dogs are fine and everything went well.

actually not so good to do ivermec injection at the same time with spaying as the liver and other organs already have lots of work getting rid of anaesthetic and antibiotics.

usually my dogs are back to normal the following day after operation already.

the injection is ivermec which actually is a preventive for heartworm disease. as it is a kind of insecticide it will also kill off ticks, flea and mites on the dog. BUT it is only effective for a few days until the dogs body has eliminated it. for heartworm it's ok as it kills all larvae in certain stages and is enough to do so every 2 months.

for ticks the best for the long run is drop on and spray surroundings. once a tick has bitten your dog it can already have transmitted the disease.

i put the ticks in a plastic bag and squeeze them in there and dispose of. they can survive in the toilet and continue their life at the other end of the pipe :o
