I joined Thai Visa only a week ago. I spoke to Rod Kalashnikov only once before he was banned. NO, I'm not envious of him.

I became entangled in this thread because some guy questioned how a Buddhist could be so angry. I tried to explain that we're not all pacific. I thought I made it very clear, but I didn't cater for the semi-literate.

Next, some other guy accused Rod of being a bigot. I'd seen some of his posts and he didn't strike me as bigoted, so I went and read his posts for this month again to see if I'd missed something. I hadn't.

Suddenly I became Rod Kalashnikov's Clark Kent.

The beat goes on.

I was a little surprised about the hospitals putting up notices warning potential preys of this so called man. If what was reported was true, couldn't they have done more than this. A one legged farang in the province couldn't be that difficult to find???....

The wording of the original report is a little confusing. I assumed that the notices in the hospitals were displayed after the man was caught, and were displayed to encourage girls who had had sex with him to get tested. I don't think they were displayed before he was caught to warn them not to have sex with him.

That makes more sense...

German mass spreader of HIV to face only expired-visa charge

CHAIYAPHUM: -- A lawsuit will be filed on Monday against a German naval veteran suspected of deliberately infecting many young women with HIV in this northeastern province, a senior public prosecutor said recently.

Legal action will be taken against Hans-Otto Schiemann, 56, for overstaying his visa for three years, said Pawarit Chaloemsan, deputy chief of the provincial prosecutors office.

The German is being held at the provincial jail, in the heart of a community yet to come to grips with what has happened.

His wife, who said she had once survived a violent attack from him, is dying of Aids.

Schiemann’s preyed on girls aged 15 and older, whom he would approach after school offering them the equivalent of their parent’s monthly wage to have unprotected sex with him.

He also often went on sex tours of other provinces, from North to South.

He will be charged with overstaying his visa, but no other charges have been brought. “We have him on visa charges, but we want to make it much harder for him than that,” the jail’s chief said. “If we let him go he might just go to Cambodia, Laos or Burma and keep spreading this disease.”

A deputy chief of the provincial police said Thailand had no laws making infecting people with HIV a crime. “I think it’s very bad, but there is nothing we can do,” he said.

Schiemann had in the past constantly presented himself at the police station to complain about the greed of Thai women, he said.

In an interview at the jail Schiemann told The Nation, “In Chaiyaphum, I want to kill people.

“In Thailand everything is not normal. In fact, it is very abnormal,” he said. “They say a man is free here to do as he wishes, but he is not: he must pay the woman.”

“They have taken my freedom and I cannot defend myself,” he added.

Out of the province’s population of about one million people, one in every 100 is HIV-positive.

“They sell their children here,” Schiemann said. “The only reason I’m in jail is because I had sex with a policeman’s daughter, who was nice but then became nasty after she became a singer at a night club.

“She stole my passport and bank card . . . all of my money. I tried to report it to police, they wouldn’t listen,” he said.

A local healthcare official said he did not know how many people Schiemann had infected, “but it’s somewhere in the vicinity of 400 to 500”.

Dont what this poster is on but of course its total rubbish. The California Partner Study provided couples counseling in combination with social support to serodiscordant heterosexual couples where one partner is HIV positive and the other HIV negative. Condom use increased and no new HIV infections were reported among the couples. Programs providing HIV testing and counseling for couples have also been effective in Tanzania, Kenya and Trinidad. Why on earth would Thailand be any different?

Sheri, I think the operative word is "reported" use of condoms. Surveys of Thai persons are notoriously unreliable because the surveyee will try to give the answer that he thinks the surveyer wants to hear, so neither person loses face. This happens even in anonymous surveys. After all, remember that all this sex among young persons is an "offense against Thai values" anyway.

As I said before, with HIV, you either lose the societal hypocrisy about sex, or you lose the society.

This is horrible story but again, it is a big question to thai society why these young girls willing to have sex with this old german guy? Why prosituion seems to be normal act to them ,why do they willing to sell their body their pride and risk their life for a few bahts.I think Thais should ask themself,too .It is Sad.

i'd still like to know how they think 400-500 girls have been infected when less than 100 have shown up to be infected. or has the person making these statements also gone around and had sex with all these girls.

that article that came out today had mostly the same info, word for word, as other articles when the story first came out. not much new info. but at least the story is not being forgotten. of course its easy to notice that this is a case of a pathetic foreigner so its also a chance to draw attention from other worthwhile subjects.

Chaiyaphum, Thailand: -- A one-legged German who is at the centre of a mass HIV scare involving hundreds of Thai women and girls faces deportation from the country, officials said on Saturday.

Hans-Otto Schiemann, 54, said he was confirmed with the HIV virus three years ago, and health officials said he could have had unprotected sex with up to 400 people.

Schiemann, who boasted of being like "heroin to girls", posed such a health threat that authorities printed banners and thousands of flyers warning students away from him.

He was arrested for overstaying his visa and faces deportation at a court hearing on Monday, but Thai officials said they were powerless to take action over allegations about his sexual conduct.

Other countries, including the United States and Britain, have prosecuted men who have had unprotected sex knowing they had the virus but the scale of the case in Thailand has shocked officials and the community.

In a 30-minute interview in a prison meeting room, Schiemann - married to a Thai woman for five years who is now ravaged with Aids - complained of being persecuted.

"They persecute playboys here like Hitler persecuted the Jews," said the bearded Schiemann, who showed no remorse about continuing to have sex with women.

"I got it (HIV) three years ago, I didn't have it when I first came here," he said, but added it was "not important in my body".

He declined to go into more details about his sexual campaign other than saying: "I am heroin to girls."

He also boasted of paying off the police. "I am smart and I know the law better than they do. Soon I will be free."

Neighbours said Schiemann drove around this northern Thai town and offered large sums of money for sex. He also frequented karaoke bars to find women.

"We don't know how many girls he has had relations with but we estimate that it could reach 400," a health official assigned to the case said.

A banner commissioned by a town hospital named Schiemann as a health threat to women and warned that he was "seeking female students to have sex with him for a lot of money".

The warning added: "Female students please be careful and try to send him back to his country."

The hospital has urged all girls in and around the town to be tested for HIV and Aids regardless of whether they slept with the German.

Schiemann, a former sailor in the German navy who first visited Thailand nine years ago, refused to have a blood test at Chaiyaphum prison to confirm he has HIV or Aids, police said.

Official estimates of the scale of his sexual activities were supported by neighbours.

"I know of about 100 girls between the age of 15 and 17 who Schiemann paid about 5 000 baht (about R800) for unprotected sex," said a neighbour, who did not want to be named.

The sum would be equivalent to more than the monthly income of a family in Thailand's poorest region known as Issan.

Many impoverished women from the region are drawn into the kingdom's infamous sex industry and some local officials actively campaign for women to marry foreign men to try to bring more money into the area.

Left frail by the effects of advanced Aids, Schiemann's wife Jiraporn Paktaku, 30, said at her home that she lived in fear of her husband being released to prey on women again.

She said she was always locked in a room every time her husband went off to have sex with other women. "I knew about the women but I told him it was okay because I was so afraid of being hurt," she said.

"I only discovered I had Aids when I went to hospital last year after I swallowed poison to try to kill myself."

If found guilty of immigration offences Schiemann was likely to be deported, according to Lieutenant Colonel Khampol Nonuch, heading the investigation into the German. He could also be jailed for up to two years.

It was not immediately clear if he would be sent back to Germany if found guilty.

I didn't read related journals since I left the Infectious Disease Dept at the Univ. Hosp. in ZH 4 years ago. Until then condoms were the most reliable means of providing "safer sex".

Please name the JAMA's issue you read this article.

One might take in consideration that it is not the condom itself which is "unprotective" but the way one uses it!

And reminds me of a basic principle.

Educate your girls, any girls that if they want to have sex, for money or for "love",

they should protect themselves, i.e. the partner uses a condom.

He does not.

Is none of the neighbours or girls which went for testing willing to witness against the guy? How has it been established that the girls were 15 and older? Something he stated, because he is confident to evade prosecution this way?

The failure of Thai authorities to even charge him with sex with minors is appalling.

They are not even sure to deport him to Germany, where he is very likely to face prosecution. Could this have anything to do with the bribes he prouds himself of?

(Some) Thai police are the pits, shoot people for rolling a spliff, but let perverts spread disease and abuse minors.
