Dial Up Speed Booster

Featured Replies

I have been downloading various dial up speed boosters (freeware) with little or no improvement in speed,

I am still looking for a speed booster so if you have any suggestions they would be welcome.

no broadband is available in my neck of the woods, satellite does not seem worth the trouble given slow speeds reported on this forum

Read some good reviews of Onspeed....not free....and some mediocre ones.

A lot of it is snake oil!

You simply can only push bits through your line at the speed it is connected with the other side!

What these so-called accelerators do is change some setting which reduces the overhead a bit (where overhead is data needed to control the connection, it eats a bit of the available speed). Gives very little improvement.

There are however some tricks that can be done, for example the latest generation dial-up modems do compression, but normally only on text parts.

What the above mentioned onspeed does, is to compress everything compressible BEFORE sending it to you. You can set it to highly compress any images it finds on any website, the quality of the pictures will get very low, but your page will load much much faster.

It will not accelerate file downloads, again the speed of this is limited by your line speed!

Sorry there :o

I have to agree that it is snake oil. In a desperate attempt to get a little more speed from both dial up and finally Shitstar I tried at least six different programs. Free ones as well as free trials and improved nothing.
