3g

I read in the paper that AIS is testing 3G in select places. Does anyone have info on that? e.g. where are they testing it, and how can I sign up? :o

Conceivably, they could implement HSPA at 14Mbit/s and thereby provide some serious competition to DSL. Net speed to the outside world won't be much better than DSL of course because of the international bottleneck but getting a reliable line that doesn't go out on the local level would already be a huge improvement.

Where I live, DSL is basically hopeless. It worked in the beginning when they set it up but TOT doesn't have any competent people in Pai. If you look at the phone lines, it's a jumbled mess of cables. So every time the old TOT phone people, who haven't a clue about DSL, install a new line or tinker with anybody's phone line, DSL gets worse. The next competent DSL technician lives 3 hours away in Mae Hong Son. I have pretty much given up on it now.

It's not so much a matter of getting the last line in place - which TOT already has - it's more a problem of a shortage of staff.

"I don't know, honey... camera not working.... what?.... I can't hear you.... (making static noises).... what?...."

I can imagine going out with friends and video-calling other friends. Would be fun... for about 5 minutes. Then I'd never use it again :D

Contact AIS directly. 1175 from your handset, or [email protected] . They are very responsive.

Believe they are targeting post-paid/Corporate accounts for the trial. Not sure about which hand-sets will be supported. Haven;t seen any pricing/packaging yet either.

Let us know what they say.

I suspect that (as usual) international bandwidth will be the key limiting factor for AIS 3G. They haven't got enough to support EDGE IMHO.
