Anyone Started, Or Has Children In Day Care?

Our Thai family has decided that the youngest of 7 daughters, unmarried, has to quit her office job in BKK to come to Ao Lek, (Krabbi area) to take care of their father. Who, is 80, and and not doing so well. (Got to love Thai tradition, and the respect they have for their elders.)

My wife has decided to help her sister, by starting a small child day care center. Complete with building, fencing, A/C, books, ect, for the locals. This will keep her sister busy during the day, and take care of the father as needed. We will hire an architect, (one of her other sisters) to design, and a local construction firm to build it. There is plenty of space, and the locals would love it! They are a well respected family, so I am affraid of too many kids, all at once!

Here are my questions:

1. Does she need insurance?

2. Does she need a building permit?

3. Does she need a business license?

4. Should she pay payroll taxes? and other income taxes?

5. What are good hours of operation? We are thinking 5am to 3pm, extra if later.

6. Starting salary for helpers?

My wife thinks she can just open the doors, pay the employees in cash daily, and keep the profits without reporting anything! I want it to be legal, so I am asking anyone with any real knowledge to help us.

We will be in town for a few months starting in July, and would like get get started then.

Thank you,

Hi,

You will need to form a company if you want to do it all legally and pay tax etc

to do this you will need 2million baht in the bank and 4 thai staff

your wife if she will be the owner or founder will need to have a Masters Degree

Good Luck!

Thankyou Tinkerbell, for the reply. Other than planning and construction costs. Why does she need 2 million baht? Does the government need some type of bond? She does have her masters degree, but not in that field. We were planning on employing 1 person for every 5 kids.

We will hire someone to do all the legal paper work first. If it becomes to much of a problem. I'm sure my wife has another plan.

Thankyou,

With this type of mis-leading information - its no-wonder the Thai's, let alone the farangs, get confused or have a hard time setting up business in Thailand. :o

OP:

Setting up a sole propriotorship in your wife's name or a limited partnership in both your names should be sufficient.

Going down to the Amphur, OBT or Thesabhn office that administers your area should sort out any and all permits & / or qualification issues (if any). They usually have a "one stop shop" where you walk in and tell them what you are going to do and they will provide the relevant permits for your perusal.

Insurance is a personal choice (& liability). Best speak to an insurance company to see if they have a product tailored to your needs.

If you actually want to work in the business, you will need a work permit. Being married to a Thai allows you to bypass minimum employee, wage payment & qualification levels, provided you are not seen as taking a job that a Thai person could easily perform.

Doing a forum search in this link below or the SME forum will answer a lot of your questions.

When you get down here - go and see Krabi Consultants - they will be able to answer all your qu's.

As a parent, i would welcome another kindergarten, but you mentioned 'ao lek' - do you mean 'ao luk' - which is about 40kms from Krabi...

Thank you soundman, and mr_lob for the reply and sound advice. I have convinced my lovely wife to hire a consultant and have a business plan spelled out before we hire a contractor.

Yes, it is in Ao luk. You mentioned "another kindergarten". What are their rates per child per month?

thank you
