April 30, 200818 yr Hello people.i've been looking on ebay for a used laptop, but the choices are endless,& i dont want to commit to anything as yet. I'd ideally want something that i could use to play around with website design (its getting a joke doing it in an internet cafe) along with extras added later such as photoshop etc.Other than that,i wouldnt be doing nothing special with it,although being wireless capable would be attractive.I'd be travelling with it,but weight is not a big issue. Would you buy a laptop off of Ebay,or where would you recommend for buying used laptops online? Any advice/opinions on what specs & make, model i should be looking at? Thanks for any help.

Maybe I was just lucky but I bought an IBM Thinkpad laptop and a HP Vectra desktop off Ebay. The Thinkpad ran with no problems for about six years. The past couple of years a Thai friend has been using it. It has finally quit working and I have no idea what's wrong with it. He downloads all sorts of crap and frequents porn sites. He has no money and thus no decent anti virus program. I suspect it has virus problems. The HP is being used by a farang friend of mine and other than replacing a hard drive, he is still using it.

Sounds encouraging.Ive heard that the IBM models are pretty rugged. Is it generally quite cheap to get laptops repaired over here?I'm thinking parts would be expensive here, but there seems plenty of those around on the internet. As for price, well if i'm buying used it will have to be a fair bit cheaper than a new one over here for it to be worth while i guess, otherwise i'll just buy a new one. Once i get one i must remember not to lend it to anyone.
May 1, 200818 yr If weight is not an issue and you're interested in web design and photo work, i'd take a look at a refurbished Dell 17". You could get a great Inspiron 1720 for $600-$800 USD. These are big laptops, but working on a 17" screen is very nice. There's a similar 15" model available as well. For another $250, you can add a 3 year at home repair option (including thailand) or for $350 you can even cover damage done by your own accidents. I also like the upgradeability of the larger Dells, you can upgrade processors and video cards later as technology advances. Note that laptops with integrated graphics cards cannot be upgraded later though. Home & SOHO refurbs / Business Refurbs I just went to their site to check, here's a sample of what's available: Inspiron 1720 (System Identifier: 09BLL78G) * Inspiron 1720 Laptop: Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 (1.5GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache) * Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium System Price : $639.00 Operating System: Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium Memory: 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM 677MHz (2 DIMMs) Hard Disk Drive: 160 GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM) Video: 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS Software Upgrade: Microsoft Works 8.5 Certified Refurbished: Certified Refurbished Base: Inspiron 1720 Laptop: Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 (1.5GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache) Media Bay: 8X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability Network Interface Card: 1390 Wireless Card Web Camera: No Camera Hardware Upgrade: 6 Cell Primary Battery 90W AC Adapter System Color: Jet Black Laptop Screen: 17 inch WXGA+ TrueLife Glossy Laptop Screen

There are service centers here in Thailand and I have heard they are good. I haven't had any problems with my Lenovo so I don't know how the service is. If this one is as good as the last one, the next one will be Lenovo also. So far it has had no problems at all.

Thanks You won't have to replace anything - the UK charger and plug will work fine here. Plenty of plug adapters to buy in any supermarket for about 40 baht.

Wow, a Tale of Two Computer Users - I have been using free AVG for a year and have had no problems.
