The Northeast - How To Spell It?

Featured Replies

I was just wondering which English spelling people here prefer: Isan, Isaan, Isarn or Esarn (or something else...).

Both Isan and Isaan get a lot of Google results - and Thai government agencies seem to use both spellings - so I am really not sure which spelling is best.

Thanks

I, for one, prefer Isaan. But, it's a little like London or Londres.

Yes, I think I prefer Isaan as well. Beause Isan seems too short considering how the word is pronounced in Thai...

Isaan, I would say is the most accurate translation that we see for the Thai word อีสาน. To be even more accurate it should be Iisaan.

อี (ii) (s) (aa) (n) iisaan.

But this is hardly an English spelling as you have ii and aa.

londres is london in portuguese.

Whoa, I never knew that, consider me now enlightened, it may come as a bit of a shock but most of the Latin based languages use the same word for that city...... go figure eh.

There is no correct spelling for the north east region of Thailand in roman script, the only truly correct spelling is in Thai script ..... however the universally accepted transliteration is.... Isaan.

That's how Isaan Air (http://IsaanAir.com) spells it. Authoritative enough for me! :D

The Airline that Proudly Flies the Isaan Flag

Primitive vexillogy that flag is :o , Isaan or the Khorat Plateau actually has never had a flag... if it were to ever need one, the combination below of all the historical symbols of Siam, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam would be fair representation of the history and ethnicities in the region. Any other vexillologists out there or am I the lone nerd?
