The Iphone In Asia

Featured Replies

See the BBC is noting that Apple has deals with SingTel to sell the iPhone in Singapore, while Bharti Airtel will introduce it in India. Globe Telecom have the rights to the iPhone in the Philippines, and Optus will offer it in Australia.

There is a very high likelihood, IMHO, that the next gen iPhone will ditch the exclusive carrier model altogether and will be freely sold throughout the world. The exclusive carrier deals were, in hindsight, a big mistake.

The carrier deals announced now are all, I think, non-exclusive. If those were exclusive agreements, these carriers would be bragging about it loudly :o

That means that SingTel will for example sell the iPhone through its sales network, and maybe even subsidize it with new contracts, but it won't stop anyone else from also selling the iPhone in those countries. Kinda like any other phone.

They'll sell like hotcakes.

PS: This is all about the new 3G iPhone which will come out soon.

I nearly bought one on my last trip to the UK in the Apple shop but you could only have it serviced in the country you bought it in said the label. So I bought the Bose speakers for the iPod instead.

If its September in Singapore I will wait as I am due a new one from Singtel - I do hope they are up to 32 Gig by then as I already have the iTouch at that size and its nearly full.

3G iphone will come out in June, supposedly. Soon.

Straits Times today is talking about year end for release in Singapore.

They have articles in both the Tech section and the Home section

I am willing to bet it will be a lot sooner than that. 3G iPhone is imminent since iPhones are now out of stock in the U.S. and U.K. Apple stores. Cant imagine Singapore will have a reason to wait once the 3G version is out. Why would they.

I think there is no reason to wait for the official launch in Thailand. I have mine for 6 months now, now issues, no problems, just working great.
