Importing Electronic Music Equipment

Featured Replies

Hello all!

I've read the existing threads regarding importing electronics into Thailand, however I still have a few questions regarding the avoidance of ridiculously high import duties and I was hoping some of you may be able to shed more light on the subject. I've done as much research as possible and I think it's safe to assume that the items I want to bring into Thailand do not fall into the computers category, so the import duty would be 40%.

Buying in Singapore and bringing an item back to Thailand myself - this is one option I'm considering as electronic music equipment is quite cheap in Singapore. I would remove the packaging whilst in Singapore and put the item in my hand luggage. What would happen if I was stopped by customs on the way back into Thailand? Would I have to pay tax even if I said that I hadn't just bought it in Singapore? How much cash do you think I'd need to give the customs guy to make him happy?

Getting an item sent marked as a gift from family - this is another option. I could purchase from an online retailer in the US/UK and get the item shipped to my sister-in-law in CA or family in the UK. They would then send the item to me via UPS/DHL marked as a gift. What can I expect to 'get away with' using this method? For example, would it be pheasible with an item worth/declared at 1500USD?

These are the only two options I can think of to get hold of the stuff I want. Any other suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated!

My experiences is they dont care if its a gift.. Ifs its got a marked value they want thier tax, gift or not.
