Just curious..................

After reading the Tazor thread I wondered.....

Many speak of home theft/burglary

Is this mainly in condos? Or Homes & Condos?

How about all the gated communities? Is theft a problem there too?

Just curious.

I can only speak for people I know in LOS, and I haven't seen the studies.

People with detached house are far more likely to get burgled for the obvious reasons.

More security in a condo, and less points of entry.

Often, burglaries are inside jobs. Sometimes a maid or home worker will know what is in the house, and where things are. Two friends of mine, actually have 2 safes. One safe is the dummy safe that is in the bottom of a closet, and the safe with the valuable is hidden somewhere else. They live in detached houses.

I think its a problem in many places and type of building, recently in our condos w e had a break in and this is with quite good security however many people at the condos fail to use both locks on their doors and same as the Uk its a mix of "it wont happen to me" and poor security. Its usually a case of " closing the gate after the horse has bolted"

Summertime is burglary season here in Queensland, with everybody heading for the coast, so its a case of locking everything up inside and out, favourite targets are sheds and patios, favourite loot power tools , boat motors, and fishing rods and tackle all stuff that can be sold no questions asked, after being burgled 4 times in 9 years we got abit fed up, Both my shed doors are connected up to the mains after 1900hours, and anyone who breaks into the house while we are home seriously put their own lives in jeopardy, my wife and I are both disabled and we have had enough!! I mentioned it in a previous thread, we had our house here up for sale while we were in Europe for 3months, a gang of squatters moved in and trashed the place, the police would not move them out, said we needed a court order , but a stepson from roma a couple of baseball bats and a franchi did the trick!! As far as our little thai retreat is concerned 1000 bahts a month buys a problem and worry free time :o Nignoy

a few houses on my village were burgled last week, one right behind mine......and mine has had an attempt or 2 in the past.we have some workers(quite a few) that live just over the village wall so believe it was them as entrance to village has security guards.the houses that got done were the easier ones to get in......the one behind mine they got in via the slat glass windows they often use in kitchens....these are very easy to remove quietly, the other 2 houses were entered thru main door to house as these are very easy to get into unless they are bolted from inside.the worrying part is that each house had people i them asleep and they had entered the bedooms to steal gold, money etc......i do wonder what would have happened if the house owners had woken up during the burglary, could have ended up in a nasty ending as im sure they carry some sort of weapon.

my security includes a bull terrier that lives inside the house at night which i think they knew i had so having a dog(not a lapdog ) does help.......everybody should review there security and look around there property as a burglar would...they are looking for an easy quiet entry so dont give it to them.

as a minimum you can buy window/door alarms at a few hundred baht each and this would at least notify you with high decibels when your house is being entered and would scare off most burglars.

make sure you have some deadlocks or internal bolts as standard door locks are no good.

if you have security steel window/door grills then make sure there not screwed in as often they just unscrew them!!!

good luck

I live rural Buriram in a detached house with a 6ft wall all around with glass on the top. That was no deterant, neither were my dogs. The police are the best bet to be the informants to the burglars. If I pay 500 Baht a month they will do special patrols around my house at night. So they say. As I see it, it's a sort of a protection racket in that I wont get burgled. I believe they conspire with the burglars as to who to hit and who not to.

Yes, it can and does happen in gated communities too. Our daughter and her family live in a semi high-end gated community and they had break ins a couple of times. They've since beefed up their security with better locks stronger screens and window bars, security lights, etc. All unknown vehicles, including taxis, are stopped at the security gates, and the security staff makes the rounds of the neighborhoods. But that didn't stop the break ins. I'm guessing the burglar(s) was someone from the community.

Live in a detached house in small sois, no problems as made friendly with the neighbours and all would see as pretty obvious here. Know of a five star security estate that has had a lot of break-ins, now why would that place attract thieves I wonder? Condos with poor security can get hit, others unlikely. Then add on luck and whether you live in somewhere like say like Pattaya, that draws flies to <deleted>, or in a quieter area with less motivated individuals.

As above I may be just lucky due to the areas configuration, but are gated communities with the guard asleep at the front really an invitation to the big bucks? Plus I have a maid, at 3,000 a month also a good security asset as someone is always here?
