As for the word เกี๊ยะเซี้ยะ I have some difficulties:

1) The word is not in my RID (2542 = 1999 issue), although it is in common use in the newspapers... there is only the word เกี๊ยะ which means a kind of Chinese style shoe (partly made from wood), but this word has –I think- nothing to do with เกี๊ยะเซี้ยะ. Why is เกี๊ยะเซี้ยะ not listed in the said book, although the word is in common use?

2) In the internet I find three different tones of the 2nd part of the word: , เกี๊ยะเซี้ยะ , เกี๊ยะเซี๊ยะ , andเกี๊ยะเซียะ. Which one is correct?

3) I find เกี๊ยะเซี้ยะ + กับ (or กัน respectively), as in “เกี๊ยะเซี้ยะกับประชาชน” and “เกี๊ยะเซียะกัน”

I also find เกี๊ยะเซี้ยะ +ต่อ as in “เกี๊ยะเซี้ยะต่อกัน”

And I find เกี๊ยะเซี้ยะ plus direct object, as in “หากสนธิเกี๊ยะเซี้ยะทักษิณ”

Which kind is correct? All three?

(by the way, I am quite sure that this word is a recent loan from Chinese 接洽 (jiéqià) which means to arrange with, to consult with)

Any help would be much appreciated…

Thank you in advance, Erwin

All three represent the pronunciation [HS]kia[HS]sia - diphthongs followed by sara a are *all* short as far as the tone rules are concerned. The spelling with mai tri on the second syllable is definitely wrong - mai tri and mai chattawa may only be used with mid consonants, because these marks are only needed with mid consonants.

The correct writing base on the original Taechew Dialect should be เกี้ยเซี้ย. It means to conciliate and compromise.

Thank you, Richard W. and yoot. Now that I know that the correct writing should be เกี้ยเซี้ย, I found much more information on this word...
