Surge Tank

Recommended Posts

For the experts:

Large pool, 140 m² surface, around 200 m³ volume. The pool designer has suggested a surge tank of 5 m³ volume. I am trying to understand the sizing, having asked the designer he just said: "We need 5 m³". Is there any calculation available, some "rule over thumb"...?

I'm no expert but my lap pool has about 60 m3 with an 18m long "infinity" style pour off along one side, and the 5 m3 surge tank is not too large at all so I would say the surge tank should be around 10% of the pool volume, if it has a similar design. Make sure it has a good overflow because when it rains the surge tank will fill very fast.

no real rule over thumb Claude. a lot depends on how many people are using the pool at the same time as well as their activities. the tank has to be dimensioned to take the water displaced by the bodies as well as the water displaced by activities (e.g. jumping into the pool displaces much more water than breast stroke swimming) without overflowing. if the pool you mentioned is frequented sometimes by a dozen persons the volume of 5m³ are (in my opinion) not enough.

in my case the "experts" (we have built more than a hundred pools :o) dimensioned the tank too small and it took me months to find a way rigging it without excavating and replacing the tank with a bigger one.

BTW how do you guys make that M-little-3 "cubed" sign?

hold down alt-key, type on numeric pad 179, release alt-key. that procedure enables you generate a wealth of characters which are not normally available as single keys such as:

² ½ é à ñ ™ ¶ ↓ ∟ ▲ î ì Ä æ û ¢ ¥ £ ▓ ± █ ■ π Σ σ µ τ Φ Θ Ω δ ∞ φ ε

There is a rule of thumb for sizing a surge tank and its 10% A 5M3 tank is way too small for a pool of this size and it will only give you problems.
