I am really at a loss on how to fix this. The problem is mostly that the back button often takes me back 2 or 3 pages. The forward button is malfunctioning also. I have noticed that the dropdown menu bounces around when I use it and the mouse doesn't easily click in fill in boxes like password etc.

So Far I have tried,

deleteing temp. internet files, cookies history, index.dat restart computer with no improvement.

I was thinking that maybe the problem was coming from java or flash player, so i removed those but no improvement.

I also used disk cleanup for the C disk.

These are all the things i know how to do. I am now thinking of purchasing a program called registry fix but that is just a long shot. I am also thinking I ned to take the computer to Pantip and delete everything on it, wipe it clean and have them reload a fresh copy of WindowsXP.

I also tried using the Firefox browser and it does the exact same things as IE so the problem is not confined to IE.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated as i have been working on this for 2 days now and have gotten nowhere.

Thanks.

May you try an different mouse! It could be the Mouse or even the Keyboard but if you mainly work with mouse I would check that to first.

Cheers.

Try using a different mouse, a simple basic non USB one is best, to see if that helps. If your regular mouse is one of the fancier type mice then see if you can update the drivers. If it's a wireless mouse then change the batteries and check everything is plugged in as it should be. If you're using an old Intellimouse then that is likely the problem.

Install the latest version of Java (3.6) and remove all the old versions you have, update Flash while you're at it.

Having someone at Pantip install a presumably pirated version of Windows wouldn't be the greatest of ideas. If you haven't got a genuine version you can install then get yourself one, you will be better off in the long run. Buying a registry program is unlikely to solve the problem. If it's only been happening for a few days then try using system restore. You may have accidently deleted something that is causing your problems.

If you have the same problems on Firefox as well as IE, it's an indication that it's not a browser problem - therefore I suspect it's the site's that you are visiting that are triggering the back/forward button problem for instance. Sites that are using special user interface techniques (Ajax), are known to cause this issue. I don't think you have the issue on all sites, just some therefore. Mouse driver or hardware issues, could be another cause - Go to Computer Management, Devices and uninstall the mouse driver, then restart the machine and let the PlugnPlay re-install the drivers (make sure you the drivers available for re-installation if needed)

As for the cursor (mouse click) problems, it sounds more like a slow Internet connection (or possibly slow machine/hard drive/memory problems - difficult to tell without seeing) rather than a IE issue. You possibly need a memory upgrade to resolve this. You should also try to defragment your hard-drives (right-click/Properties/Tools/Defragment). Also, go to Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all uneccessary software. Lastly, visit Microsoft (Genuine/Authentic Microsoft OS I assume) update, and make sure youre machine got all the latest patches and updates.

As for general maintenance and prevention tools that are good to use I would initially recommend:

  • Anti-virus (AVG Free Edition for instance)
  • Anti-spyware (Web-root, AVG, LavaSoft - Ad Aware free)
  • Crap-Cleaner (Free, resolve registry, and generally "cleans" your computer - history, cookies, temporary files etc etc)

Cheers,

J

I have AVG, CC cleaner and adaware already and have already uninstalled and reinstealled flash and java.

Also, when i click on IE to open a new abrowser lately sometimes two browsers are opening up instead of just one.

However, I think you guys may be on to something about the mouse. maybe it is the mouse.

I have a UBS port mouse, but it is very old. I am going to get a new one today and see if that fixes it. This is a good lead and something I never would have considerd. Thanks.

Oddly enough i had the same problem this week with IE7 browser. The back button and the forward buttons were no operating and also i could not type in the search box. BY chance i removed the mouse restared IE7 and all started to work again. Maybe its the same thing?

WOOHOO!!

I just installed a new mouse bought at Tesco and everything is fine now.

Thanks to everyone who helped with this problem. I spent 2 days playing around with this and never even thought about the mouse.
