naughtybadfurrimunki Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Hi guys, I want to use a U.S. 117 volt electrical appliance in Thailand. I know this kind of thing has been covered before but I can't find any specific advice about where to buy a voltage step down converter. Does anyone know where can I get one? I'm in Lad Prao, BK. Is there anywhere 'on the doorstep' so to speak? Fortune Town for example? Also, whilst on the subject, does anyone have any recommendations for a good quality, reliable UPS? Many thanks in advance...
ballbreaker Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Any local mom and pop electrical supply store will most likely have a transformer that will do the job.

Step down transformers start at 300 watts and go up in size, price and weight to 1000, 2000, 3000 watt and higher. It can quickly cost more for the transformer than the price of a new 220v appliance. naughtybadfurrimunki Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 Hi guys, Many thanks for the advice. The item in question is a piece of 80's vintage electronic music equipment made by Roland. On the back of the unit it says: AC 117 volts 50/60Hz 14W I'm guessing 14W isn't a lot? Many thanks for your assistance!
Gary A Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I bought one at Emporium in Bangkok. It's called Elect-Max. It's a nice little unit that knows if it is plugged into 240 or 120 volts. It works both ways automatically. Plugged into 240 it steps down to 120 and if 120 steps up to 240. It is rated at 80 watts. I wasn't cheap. I think it cost about 1,600 baht.
