Antivirus And Firewall

Hi all,

I have few questions regarding antivirus software and firewall.

I previously had nod32 and my laptop only needed 1'10"-1'20"(70-80 sec) to fully bootup including wi-fi, but since I've switched to AVG, it seems taking forever!

Is this symptom got to do with AVG or is it crashing with my firewall setting?

Sorry,I can't answer your question but maybe the answer to mine lies in the same place.

I have been using AVG for many years and the last few with Spybot and Spywareblaster.

Since downloading AVG 8 free version everything is working at snails pace. Also I can't seem to download any updates for Spybot.

Is there a conflict? Do I need Spybot now that AVG has adware protection? Will I be protected by just using AVG?

I am not a big user of the internet and I switch off my computer after use.

Any help please!

I have just replaced AVG with AVAST and reboot my laptop.

It seems boot-up time has greatly reduced, but still takes longer than when I had NOD32.

Any explanation?

You may well find that having two anti virus programmes will cause problems as they conflict with each other. I would try and install avg 8 onto a flash drive, uninstall from your pc, clean the hard drive up (defrag etc) the reinstall avg 8 from the flash drive.

Thats my configuration and it works perfect and smooth:

Comodo firewall pro (free), Comodo memory firewall (free), Comodo BOclean (free), Nod32 3.0

NEVER under any circumstances use 2 different AV scanner at the same time. You might run in deep trouble resulting in reformatting your hard disk!

What about having windows firewall turned on while antivirus has the same function(firewall), will it cause conflicts?

Same rule as for AV applies for firewalls: NEVER use 2 firewalls at the same time!!! You certainly WILL run into big trouble!

If you can avoid to use Windows firewall than avoid it and use a third party firewall, but thats my opinion only. Normally a third party program with firewall included will disable Windows firewall during installation.

Check via Control Panel > Windows Firewall, and you might find that the Windows Firewall is not running.

I used to use ZoneAlarm, now now use COMODO, and both of them turn the Windows Firewall off during their installation.

Thanks webfact but as I mentioned earlier now I have AVAST and I don't really know it's got firewall within it.

I've looked at it's options(AVAST) but it doesn't say anything about it(firewall), so I manually turned windows firewall on, I wonder if it'll lead me into disaster or something.

How can I be sure there ain't two firewalls running on my com?

I have avast antivirus & use windows firewall. No spybot remover crap.

System has detected 3 viruses since 1/6/2006 & has always been able to successfully catch & remove any nasties.

I used to use Zone alarm firewall & it really dragged my machine into super slo-mode on startup.

I find keeping it simple works the best & the windows original firewall works , so there is no real need for additional firewalls.

I would avoid anything bundled up with your anti virus- The more programs attached it seems like the likely hood of more issues are present.

Keeping it simple works the best on my computers.
