Thanh-BKK Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Hello I'm facing an annoying problem since a few days and really wonder what that is all about - so much i can tell, it is NOT my computer itself! So here goes. Whenever i have my machine running for the day, main activity being Bit Torrent (with connected high data throughput up and down), after some hours i lose http. Means i can no longer open any web site and also active torrents lose connection to their tracker, but keep going with already connected peers. I had an identical problem some time ago in Windows (XP as well as Vista) and now i am on Linux, so can't blame the OS. Also, as soon as i reboot the router (!) it all works again, without touching the computer. Now is this a ROUTER issue or one with TRUE? As upon router restart i get a new IP as well, so it could be either. The router is a D-Link, can't remember the exact type now, a modem-router that also includes a wireless part. This problem happens since about last week Thursday, daily. Any advice? Best regards...... Thanh

I had an similary problem some few years ago and placed an small Fan to blow to the router and haven't any problem since than! But is was the same symptom at that time and just a reboot of the router was solving that problem before I placed that Fan! I bought that Fan by Amorn for THB 200 and the diameter is about 18 cm and have a clamp for to place/fix them to its place. Cheers.
stumonster Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 bittorrent will keep alot of connections open even when they have either finished or the route has been lost with no FIN to close the connection and you can end up with the router RAM full. a few other things bit torrent will produce include a large amount of ACks which can cause congestion. it depends on how configurable your router is and how much onboard RAM it has. with tomato on my WRT54GL I can set quite a large max amount of connections and also control the times for waiting and other discrepencies and have the connections closed.
Thanh-BKK Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 Hi Now i'm back home and can tell you what precise router that is. A D-Link "DSL-G604T", no idea about amount of RAM etc. What puzzles me is that this problem was there a while back, then went away all by itself, and now is back again without me ever changing anything, my computer does the same thing day-by-day and it even happens when the air condition is on. It really just seems to depend on either how much data was pumped thru or how many connections are/were open at the same time (i.e. how many torrents i run at the same time) - i have to admit as being on private sites only i've been running more than usual the past few days to catch up on seeding. I have never changed any of the settings in this router apart from the ports to be forwarded, to be honest i have no idea what all these settings in there are for. But, as mentioned, it's been working fine all the time...... Will see tomorrow, i gonna run some fewer torrents Best regards..... Thanh
